Cheney Sees 4 Percent Growth 'Or Better'
Cheney Sees 4 Percent Growth 'Or Better'
Sun September 14, 2003 01:53 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney said on Sunday the United States had "turned the corner" to economic recovery and he expected GDP growth next year of 4 percent or better.
On NBC's "Meet the Press" program, Cheney also said the administration expected to cut the federal deficit "roughly in half" from next year's level in the coming five years.

"Going into next year, we anticipate ... growth on the order of 4 percent or better in GDP," Cheney said. "So I think we've turned the corner, and we're making significant progress, and that's part of the normal business cycle, as well as the added unusual factors of a national emergency."

Cheney spoke as a new Washington Post-ABC News poll showed that 56 percent of Americans now disapprove of the job President Bush is doing handling the economy -- the highest negative rating on the issue since he took office. Sixty percent disapproved of Bush's request for an additional $87 billion to fund the Iraq war.

Nearly six in 10 of those polled were critical of the way Bush has handled the federal budget, which the White House says will top $525 billion next year.

With deficits projected for the next 10 years, Cheney said he expected it to be halved in five years time.

"We anticipate, even with the added spending ($87 billion for Iraq) that we've asked for now, we'll cut the deficit roughly in half from where it will be next year over the next five years," he told NBC. "So we will be moving in the right direction."

17. Cheney's Not The Problem....
The problem is the media: Russert, Snuffaluffagus, Scheifer, et al who know the tuth and ask nothing!

All of Bush's lies and shitty past are out there, always have been, and no news people go after a single story---nothing!

That's not incompetance, that's agenda.

5. A rich fantasy life for such a tough looking guy
Who would've thought that such a grey-suited, snarling old bastard could lead such a vivid interior life, completely disconnected from the real world? I've got nothing against it, of course. I just hate it when they publish the stuff as if it meant something.

9. Since When is He an Economist?
Unless the economy grows siginificantly faster than the expected 3.6 percent, we can be certain the recovery had nothing to do with the Bush tax cuts.

10. Heh heh
love it!

4%, huh? You know, he could be right after all. They could work out a deal with the Treasury and print $4 billion in extra currency. That could pump a bunch of money through the system and it might just work. Of course, the aftereffects would be... disaster.

23. They are printing far more than $4 billion in extra currency.
Since January of this year, the amount of currency has been increased by $18.2 billion. But the total money supply has increased by much, much more. The most common money supply measures, M1, M2, and M3, have increased this year by $73.4 billion, $312.5 billion, and $435 billion respectively.

http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/H6/Current/

The $435 billion increase in M3, which is the broadest measure of the money supply, equals more than 4% of annual GDP.

13. This sort of talk can only be justified
in a time of "war" as disinformation and propaganda. I have to believe that Cheney thinks that he is saying this stuff for the good of the war effort even if he knows it isn't true.

15. Deficit halfed?
This is good? At this rate 2 trillion (plus interest) will be added to the deficit by 2008. Of course, that assumes no "fuzzy math".

20. The national debt will be approaching $10 trillion.
And interest payments will exceed defense spending in the annual budget. And the money to make those interest payments will be borrowed, adding even more to the debt. All to be paid by our children and their children and so on.

19. After power co's raped and pillaged CA, he blamed Californians.
Wonder who he'll blame when growth is -4.0%?

"One year after President Bush signed the tax cut into law, the
economy is growing, consumer spending is up and America is on the
path to economic recovery. The tax cut provided a much needed boost
to our economy at just the right time by...boosting investment and
creating jobs... The tax cut will help create 800,000 jobs by the
end of 2002."

does not matter, as long as headlines are the "news" and not much else is pursued re the logic and the truth to the matter. All truth is now in "headlines' and in PR efforts and in the "appeal" of the CNN commentators who look like Barbie dolls and act like painted Barbie dolls. CNN reporters, if you care to call them such, which they are not, are all Barbie Dolls reading from some script someone has given to them.
They are incapable of actually reporting any news at all.

There is not a one of them "Barbie Dolls" that has any personality or any talent, that is indicative of a thinking human being. This is a disgusting way of life here in the US--and Bush and Cheney and all their cohorts, know how to pull the wool over the eyes of the people who have been herded into sheep pens and who actually believe the Barbie Doll reporting the "news" on CNN is an acutal "journalist"!! What a joke this country has become under the Bush et al. It is something to be ashamed of.
