Another dead microbiologist has turned up, this time in the parking garage at MU:

1. These ongoing murders have given me a great plot idea
Consider: Earth after a biologically engineered apocalypse. The survivors spend their remaining efforts to perfect time travel, and go back in time to stop the scientist who developed the doomsday virus. Problem is, as they murder one, another one ends up discovering it in the future anyway, so they murder another, and another, etc... The discovery seems to be inevitable.

Wait. That's the plot to 'Twelve Monkeys'. And 'La Jetee' before that.

Damn, these murders are very strange!

3. Did you ever buy the "suicide" of the Harvard guy?
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 05:08 PM by LiberalHeart
Also, seems to me there was another microbiologist in FL who was stabbed when going to his car. Anybody remember that one?

On edit: I just checked. The guy in FL left his lab early one day (unexplained why) and was clubbed to death by four men when he went to his car.

4. There have been a few dozen over the last 4 years -- all strange
Question is: anyone know an insurance agent who can check the actuarial tables on how likely it was for all these career-related people to die in mostly unusual circumstances over few years?

5. There was a much longer thread yesterday when the story first broke.
Some discussions along the lines of 30 people in this field being murdered or committing suicide in the past few years. Aslo, about 20,000 people employed in similar positions worldwide - although the dead are among the elite in these fields.

Tin foil hat stuff for sure.

...sit with their friends bragging about their kids. "Yes, little Bobby is a microbiologist...I really wish he would have gone into something a little safer, like police work or firefighting..."

some great stuff on it re: dead microbiologists

on edit:

Heres a taste of how deep this thing goes:

November 12, 2001

The beginning of numerous mysterious deaths of renowned microbiologists. A good place to start learning about this is a Globe and Mail article, which calls these deaths a “tale only the best conspiracy theorist could dream up” yet hard to explain . The first dead microbiologist is Dr. Benito Que, 52, was “an expert in infectious diseases and cellular biology at the Miami Medical School. Police originally suspected that he had been beaten on November 12 in a carjacking in the medical school's parking lot. Strangely enough, though, his body showed no signs of a beating. Doctors then began to suspect a stroke.”

November 16, 2001

Dead microbiologist: Dr. Don Wiley, 57, disappears during a business trip to Memphis, Tennessee. He had just bought tickets to take his son to Graceland the following day. Police found his rental car on a bridge outside Memphis. His body was later found in the Mississippi River. Forensic experts said he may have had a dizzy spell and fallen off the bridge. Police will only say, “We began this investigation as a missing person investigation. From there it went to a more criminal bent.” “Wiley is seen as one of the world's leading researchers of deadly viruses, including HIV and the Ebola virus.” Wiley worked at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Harvard University, and was an expert on the immune system's response to viral attacks. He was widely regarded as the nation's foremost expert in using special X-ray cameras and mathematical formulas to make high-resolution images of viruses. The FBI is monitoring the investigation because of his research knowledge.

November 21, 2001 (B)

Dead microbiologist: World-class microbiologist and high-profile Russian defector Dr. Vladimir Pasechnik, 64, dies of a stroke. Pasechnik, who defected to Britain in 1989, had played a huge role in the development of Russian biowarfare, heading a lab of 400 “with an unlimited budget”and “the best staff available.” He says he succeeded in producing an aerosolized plague microbe that could survive outside the laboratory. He was connected to Britain's spy agency and recently had started his own company. “In the last few weeks of his life he had put his research on anthrax at the disposal of the Government, in the light of the threat from bioterrorism.”

November 24, 2001

Three more dead microbiologists: A Swissair flight from Berlin to Zurich crashes during its landing approach; 22 are killed and nine survive. Among those killed are Dr. Yaakov Matzner, 54, dean of the Hebrew University school of medicine; Amiramp Eldor, 59, head of the haematology department at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv and a world-recognized expert in blood clotting; and Avishai Berkman, 50, director of the Tel Aviv public health department and businessman.

12. Im published
an interesting article on blood clots and tumor metastasis

I keep seeing people characterize these guys as "anth*rax experts" etc. but glancing through Ims list of recent publications shows nothing near anth*rax research. Has anyone gone through the publications of these guys and tried to find a pattern? Something more specific than--just microbiologists? Does anyone think it is worth doing?

11. From the article....
He was found in the trunk of the burning car; he had been stabbed in the chest. The cops won't talk about his activities that day.

We're allowed to post only four paragraphs:

Columbia police on Monday continued seeking a masked man who was carrying a gas can in the garage where a professor's body was found in a burning car's trunk.

(snip)

Weimer would not provide details of Im's death, which was discovered when someone picked up an emergency phone in the Maryland Avenue parking garage around 12:20 p.m. and told campus police about a car on fire.

(snip)

Police have said a man between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall, possibly wearing some type of painter's or drywall mask, is a “person of interest” in the case. The man is believed to have been carrying some type of gas can, Weimer said Monday.

Im's work involved experiments with proteins, said Professor Kim Wise of the molecular microbiology and immunology department.

15. Anyone know who the journalist is who invest. the army
and discovered it had been making weapons grade anthrax?
The dead microbiologists may have simply heard about
research by collegues (killed just in case?).

The fact that Daschle & Leahy received anthrax at a time
when both were snagging the passing of the Patriot bill points
a finger at the government.
