EU's China arms ban seen lifted soon

LONDON (Reuters) - Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has said he thinks the European Union's 15-year-old arms
embargo on China could well be lifted by July.

"I think it is more likely than not that it will be decided under this (Luxembourg) presidency of the EU," he told a
parliamentary committee.

Luxembourg holds the rotating EU presidency until mid-year when Britain takes over.

Despite fierce opposition from Washington, the EU last month pledged to work towards lifting the embargo,
imposed on China after a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

1. Good!
There should be no embargo. The US sells weapons to countries with FAR worse civil rights conditions than China. Further, China has made tremendous progress in creating a civilized, economically developed country. They are an important force for multi-polarity in the world, which can't help but contribute to world peace and development.

3. Tibet is a part of China as much as Hawaii is a part of the US.
There are also those who ask for Hawaii independence. And there is more than a little legitimacy to it. My point is that Americans live in the belly of the biggest neo-colonial power in the world. There is plenty to look at here before criticizing others.
