EVERETT - On her first full day in office on Thursday, Gov. Christine Gregoire said the state would offer a supporting role as Washington communities work to save their military bases from closure.

Naval Station Everett is Snohomish County's second-largest employer, and the economic impact of the military here was estimated at $431 million in 2003. In Island County, the military pumps an estimated $674 million annually into the economy.

Gregoire will look at the budget for military communities that need additional support during the base-closure process. Right now, the state budget doesn't include money for that. Filling a vacant position for a person to work as a liaison with communities on the base-closure issue is another thing the state can do, she said.
