NAGS HEAD, N.C. - Dozens of whales beached themselves early Saturday in rough surf and by afternoon at least 17 were confirmed dead, a spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

The whales were stranded across a five-mile stretch of the coastline near Oregon Inlet on the Outer Banks.

Laura Engleby, a spokeswoman for NOAA, said pilot whales commonly beach themselves, "but we don't know why."

Engleby said at least 22 whales beached themselves and 17 of them died, including five that were euthanized because they were suffering.

"We suspect there are more than 30," she said. "The thing that makes it confusing is that the sea conditions have been fluctuating, making it difficult to account for all of them."

The 20 adult sperm whales died on Ocean Beach near Strahan.

A second pod of whales offshore from the site of a mass beaching on King Island in Bass Strait has died, officials said.

The 17 pilot whales were confirmed dead by wildlife officers this morning, taking to total toll of dead whales and dolphins to 97 in the past 24 hours, Tasmanian Department of Primary Industry, Water and Environment spokesman Warwick Brennan said.

A mixed pod of long-finned pilot whales and bottle-nosed dolphins beached on the remote Sea Elephant Beach, north of Naracoopa, yesterday.

Rescuers counted the bodies of 55 whales and 25 dolphins by this morning.

There were no further survivors in the area, Mr Brennan said.

Meanwhile, 50 pilot whales have reportedly beached on Maria Island off Tasmania's east coast, a government spokesman said.

Just a day after more than 100 whales and dolphins died in two incidents in Tasmania, a pod of 73 long-finned pilot whales was found on Opoutere Beach, on the Coromandel Peninsula southeast of Auckland.

Two or more strandings a week are occurring in New Zealand waters, said University of Tasmania researcher Karen Evans.

When locals discovered the pod on Monday morning, 52 whales had died. Volunteers pushed 20 surviving animals out to sea, said John Gaukrodger, Hauraki area manager with the New Zealand Department of Conservation. Researchers from the University of Auckland took skin samples from the dead animals and will share genetic information with Tasmanian experts to help determine if the incidents are related.

It's strongly suspect is destroying the radar portion of the

What kills me is this is a really stupid system...proving to me
once again the government has no clue on how to obtain and
design engineering projects.

There is NO reason to use this technology when one could passively
design a system that would do that same thing.

Basically they blast a mega wave of sonar to map out the sea floor
as well as anything in the sea..this blast will show where everything is...

but the acoustics of the sea can tell them the exact same information
without have to blast the sea with a 140db jumbo wave of destruction.


but if they just used passive and worked with that technology
they could achieve the same thing and not bother the whales either.

7. Given multispecies (whales & dolphins), I think it's Navy sonar also.

And it makes me very angry, because whales and dolphins are wonderful creatures. I wonder what effect this sonar would have on scuba divers, and if the Navy is testing that too. Remember when the government/military exposed civilians and enlisted personnel to chemicals in water and air supplies, without their consents? In the present political environement, when torture is approved, I think govt./military likely to start their little clandestine experiments again.

It is ridiculous for they could be studying these sophisticated natural

21. I live in NC and Fish there

There was a massive weather front with 9 foot seas and 30kt+ winds right when this happened. Messed up my trip. The closest sub base is in Virginia. That area is to shallow for subs to operate.

Most Subs use passive (listening sonar). Active sonar gives away their location. Navy divers have worked around subs for fifty years. Sonar arrays on ships and subs do not need to be very powerful to transmit a wave through a very dense substance like water.

ULF transmissions would be a better tin foil hat target than standard sonar. But the navy has used them for 30 years.

The old people who live on the outer banks talk about whales beaching themselves every now and again for many years.

10. Very Disturbing. Pilot whales spend most time deep, meaning if #$%^ sonar

either explodes/implodes their ear canals, brains, organs; or the bursts of sound so startling that they head for the surface too rapidly and die of bends, just like a diver surfacing too quickly.

Bastards....they know damn well how destructive this technolgy, but they continue with it inspite of all of the death to dolphins and whales, who are highly evolved, sentient, and cause ZERO harm to man.

is 50 years old. Because of computers the sonar on ships and subs is less powerful (output wise) than it was 20 years ago. Water does not compress so it does not take massive pulses to create a wave in water.

Raytheon Co. said today it won a $29.7 million contract to build a sonar system for U.S. Navy helicopters to use to detect and counter underwater threats.


Raytheon's Tewksbury-based Integrated Defense Systems will do the work at the company's Naval Integration Center in Portsmouth, R.I.

The contract is for 10 AN/AQS-22 airborne low-frequency sonar systems, which will be used on the U.S. Navy's MH60R multi-mission helicopters. The sonar system is the helicopter's primary undersea warfare sensor and is used for submarine detection, tracking, localization, classification, acoustic intercept, underwater communication and environmental data collection.

Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) will manufacture, test, integrate and support the systems. The contract for 10 systems follows an earlier low-rate initial production contract for four systems, which Raytheon delivered ahead of schedule.

Does the United States of America have secret weapons of mass destruction in addition to all those we already know about? I write this letter to ask you, what has our government been doing and what is it doing now; then ask yourselves, is this possible? Joe Vialls asserts that the tsunami was caused by the detonation of a nuclear weapon of some kind by the US, assisted by Australia, and that "the Indian Government knew full well that this was not a Œnormal‚ earthquake. On 27 December India refused to join George Bush's planned exclusive 'club of four' nations to supervise the relief operations, which would have effectively pulled this Asian nuclear power out of its new BRIC alliance, which now includes Venezuela, Cuba and Iran, who has also formed a covert alliance with Iraq. On 28 December the Indian Government politely warned the American military to stay clear of Indian sovereign territory, and on 29 December the India Daily Editorial publicly questioned the nature of the event: "Was this a showdown by a country to show the region what havoc can be created?" ... The b61 mod 11 is a 200kt dial a yield thermonuclear device designed to kill buried hard targets. Its use on land would create a massive radiological event. The B61 has been around since the 50's - 60's. It is part of the arsenal.

We detonated large (500kt+) bombs underwater in testing and the fingerprint is clear. The SUBROC system was developed from this testing and was decommed in the 90's.

Any suggestion of the use nuclear weapons in the tsunami has no foundation in science. I suggest "The Core" for entertainment purposes only.

But my father worked as a physicist for the government (sandia) on the nuclear programs for thirty years. I taught university level physics (mechanical and nuclear) for several years. I have a basic understanding of the topic I'd say.

The weaponry is not classified and information on the US arsenal past and present is available online. Information about past sonar systems is also available. I would assume currently deployed sonar information is classified beyond basic information.

of expertise, but IMHO , as a long term dolphin researcher , these beachings are highly suspect plus the massive amounts of money going into projects that very few have access to. Eastland---a scientist who was associated with ARCO (Atlantic Richfield Oil Co.). ARCO has traditionally been controlled by members of the CFR (i.e. Council on Foreign Relations). Eastland, who was the "front man", now resides in TX. He transferred the patent rights to APTI, Inc. (i.e. ARCO Power Technologies Industry, Inc.) in the late 1980s, which was a Los Angeles, CA subsidiary of ARCO. APTI, Inc. then sold out to "E-Systems" on June 10, 1994, which company has pretty much, over the years, been under the control and influence of the CIA. On April 3, 1995, "E-Systems" sold out to the still larger Raytheon Corp. I don't know what has happened, by way of "transfers" since that time.
