Former math professor files lawsuit over firing from Wisconsin Lutheran

MILWAUKEE — A former math professor is suing Wisconsin Lutheran College, claiming his contract was terminated because he refused to inflate students’ grades as his department chairman and the college administration wanted.
Marvin C. Papenfuss lost his job as a full professor of math in February 2004 after about nine years at the private liberal arts college.
His lawsuit describes how the school determined to graduate as many students as possible. It says sometime in or around 2001, Papenfuss’ department chairman imposed a grading program for calculus courses that allowed “virtually no failing grades regardless of students’ class performance.”
The college’s president, Timothy Kriewall, said Papenfuss’ appeals through the college and Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod were not successful.
