WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland will not seek the Democratic nomination for Ohio governor next year, he said Tuesday.
Strickland, a six-term congressman from Lisbon whose district runs along the Ohio River for 259 miles from Youngstown to Portsmouth, said he decided not to run because there are too many national problems that need his attention in Washington.
"I've concluded that the issues that I feel most deeply about, especially at this particular time in our nation's history, are issues that are being engaged at the federal level," Strickland said, adding that he'll focus on health care, veterans needs, trade policies, Social Security and the Iraq war.
Strickland said he plans to run for re-election to his 6th District congressional seat in 2006, but he would not rule out a future run for U.S. Senate. Republican Sen. Mike DeWine's term is up in 2006, and DeWine has said he plans to seek re-election.
