I waited for almost 13 years for this guy to apologize to Clinton and to the country. That apology never came.

Col. Eugene J. Holmes, whose disclosure of how Bill Clinton avoided the draft during the Vietnam War threatened his 1992 presidential candidacy, was buried yesterday in Fayetteville, Ark. He died Saturday at 88.

Col. Holmes, a survivor of the Bataan Death March in World War II, was the director of the ROTC program at the University of Arkansas in 1969 when Mr. Clinton, then a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in England, applied for an ROTC slot that would exempt him from the Vietnam War draft.

"I believe that he purposely deceived me," the colonel said, "using the possibility of joining the ROTC as a ploy to work with the draft board to delay his induction and get a new draft classification."

The full text of the letter was made public later in 1992 during the general election campaign. A copy of the letter was given to aides to the first President Bush, running for re-election, who prepared a speech denouncing the deception to be delivered to a National Guard Association meeting in Salt Lake City in early October. But the speech was never delivered.

5. Draft Dodging and Dishonoring Military USE to be a big deal

When Homes spoke up about the possiblity, it was a big deal. But dishonoring the military and those who served isn't considered a big deal now. Thanks to the Bush administration and their appoligists.

As some one else mentioned, Clinton's number was a high one. We will never know if he would have dodged if his number came up.

The same people who flipped over this seen nothing wrong with Bush going AWOL or Cheney not serving. Seen nothing wrong with wearing purple bandages on their face to dishonor those with purple hearts.

Another words, it use to be a big deal, because it was assumed they would "get" more democrats over the issue. The thinking was that the Democrats didn't serve, but the republicans didn. As we NOW KNOW, many, many repugs skipped out of town.

7. It was a big deal

with Dan Quayle when he was selected to be Poppy's VP. He got into the Indiana National Guard out of privilage, just like Junior, in order to avoid going to 'Nam.

It was a big deal then and the press was all over it. Since it didn't matter to the voters in '88, it didn't matter about Clinton in '92.

HOWEVER, there is a difference between them and Junior, who apparently went AWOL from his privilaged spot in the Texas Air National Guard. And since Big Media in 2000 didn't treat it like it was a Big Deal, it was virtually unknown by the *bots.

The Bushies have successfully offset this allegation throughout *'s political career; and I believe CBS and Dan Rather were set up with the fake documents in order to discredit the truth altogether. You know, blowing smoke up the public's collective BUTT?

the fact is that while it's true Clinton did not want to serve in the war he never had to "dodge" the draft since he was never drafted.

and he did nothing deceptive. it was clear Clinton was against the war, he protested it and he didn't want anyone to serve in it. this is different from the Chimp who supported the war but did everything he could to avoid serving himself.

4. If you had a "high number" (as he did) you were "safe"

It's as simple as that.. Had his number come up, I doubt that he would have refused to serve.

In those days, anyone with any connections did ALL they could to avoid going.

Little colleges in Kansas were FULL of Connecticutt, NY, NJ, DC, PA, boys whose grades were not up to snuff where they came from, but Daddy would gladly pay out of state tuition so they could be "enrolled"...even in Kansas..

The irony? Lots of Kansas boys lost their possible college spots to these rich boys..and the Kansas boys went to Viet Nam..Their Daddies did not have enough money to "save" them:(

6. Not so sure I agree...

You're right, he wasn't a draft dodger. He had a number that never got called. Not sure if I agree 100% that he would have served. There's no doubt he was being groomed for the office or president even back then, so he may have gone to fulfill that obligation, but he's also an idealist. He may have refused to serve.

However, it's nothing but pure speculation what he MIGHT have done. Love how the title assumes he was a draft dodger though. Assholes.
