U.S. Firms to Boost Hiring (Intentions) in 4th Quarter
NEW YORK (Reuters)

More U.S. companies plan to hire staff in the fourth quarter than in the previous three months, marking the first quarter- to-quarter increase this year, a survey released on Tuesday said.

But the widely watched quarterly survey by staffing company Manpower Inc. (MAN) also found the number of companies expecting to cut payroll is up as well, and fourth-quarter hiring this year will not keep pace with the prior year.

On the whole, most companies expect to leave staffing levels as they are, and even sectors that traditionally add workers during the holiday season, such as retail, are showing less inclination to take on payroll than a year ago.

``There has been an increase in hiring intentions, but it is not positive enough for us to feel there is any job creation,'' Manpower Chief Executive Jeffrey Joerres said. ---

1. Schizophrenic Headline
The headline is happy-talk, but the article is gloom. What gives?

The reason is simple. Bush has tanked the US economy, and nobody thinks that the next quarter, let alone the next decade, will be profitable and prosperous.

2. very misleading headline, very close to being downright lie...
The headline "US Firms to Boost Hiring in 4th Quarter" would have been a correct headline if,

1. The total amount of expected hiring was higher than the previous month.

or

2. A majority of US firms were to boost hiring.

Neither of which are true. Actually, the momentum is negative in both an increase of firms saying they will reduce payrolls outpaced the increase of firms expected to increase hiring and less Q4 hiring than a few years ago.

OF COURSE Q4 hiring expectations are suppose to increase... hello! the holidays. but the article says that it is less than the previous year.

3. It wouldn't surpise me............
if employment figures actually declined during the holiday season. I know of a few major companies that are planning massive cutbacks in the next few months. At best, I see figures being flat. They can put as much lipstick as they want on this pig, but it remains a pig.

4. All this will bite them
in the ass eventually. By 'them' I mean CEOs and the boards that feed them.

Should they be paid? Yes. Should they get a raise at the same time the company is laying off workers? No. In fact, when considering layoffs, it ought to be law that the first paycut to avert layoffs comes from the CEO and the Board of Directors of the company in question.

To pass such a law, we would have to revoke corporate personhood.

6. geee...where have I heard this before????
last year at this time the headlines were predicting an upswing in the economy for the 4th qtr of 2002

then it was growth expected in 1st qtr of 2003, followed by "better times coming" by 2nd qtr of 2003, and "happy days soon" for the 3rd qtr of 2003

***sigh*** even a broken clock is right twice a day

to get to the truth about this "mis-administration" - you have to read between the LIES

8. Job churning---
Fire or layoff higher paid and experienced workers...

Then hire young and out of work professionals at a much lower salary...

9. You know the corporate pigs will be trying help Bush out with the economic
picture. Just proves that they can do anything they want. They fire workers in time to report that "productivity is increasing." Then they hire workers just in time to report that unemployment is decreasing. Their methods are sooooooo transparent.

11. Santa Claus Ain't Comin' to Town
unless businesses get busy and actually hire some bodies so we can all go out and feel safe - SPEND, SPEND, SPEND - and actually get some decent help at Wal-fart. With foreclosures rising dramatically, the disturbing reality is the number looking for rooms in the inn now; how compassionate!

"Hey, Laura, put 'em out back in the barn and have somebody try to distract those catterwallin' kids so they shut up! Hows come there's so many?

12. Sure they are hiring staff
In India, Mexico anywhere you can pay a worker less than a dollar an hour. With no health insurance or pension.

Or they hire workers on as consultants, again no health insurance, let them go at 19 weeks so they can't collect unemployment.
