KIEV, Jan. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Ukraine's Supreme Court on Thursday confirmed opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko as president, and rejected an appeal filed by rival candidate Viktor Yanukovych over the Dec. 26 poll.

The move thus cleared the way for Yushchenko's inauguration. He defeated Yanukovych in the ballot by a margin of 8 percentage points.

Ukrainian official newspapers also have made public Yushchenko's victory in the Dec. 26 runoff, the Itar-Tass news agency reported Thursday.

Publication of the results in official newspapers would give parliament the right to set an inauguration date.
