Ohioans swarm Washington to celebrate, protest inauguration

WASHINGTON -- While some Ohioans toasted President Bush's re-election victory, others protested his administration and the Iraq war during the elaborate festivities for Thursday's inauguration.

"We're proud of Ohio," said Jerry Nelson, a lawyer from West Chester who was listening to jazz with his family at the Ohio gala held Wednesday evening at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. "We've been working toward this goal for years."

So many Ohioans were expected to descend upon Washington for Bush's inauguration that the president's inaugural committee assigned the state one of only two Thursday night balls devoted to a single state. Florida, the deciding state in Bush's 2000 election, had the other one.

It's this closely divided electorate in Ohio that made the state the No. 1 battleground of the presidential election. Ohio ultimately became the state to give Bush his second term.

"We're proud of Ohio," said Jerry Nelson, a lawyer from West Chester who was listening to jazz with his family at the Ohio gala held Wednesday evening at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. "We've been working toward this goal for years."

Karyle Mumper of Marion served as one of Ohio's 20 electors. At the Ohio gala, she was one of about 2,000 guests who were eager to celebrate Bush's win and put the squabbling and election-related lawsuits aside.
