WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Flag-draped coffins and jeering anti-war protesters competed with pomp and circumstance on Thursday at the inauguration of President Bush (news - web sites) along the snow-dusted, barricaded streets of central Washington.


As the president's motorcade made its way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House amid the tightest security in inaugural history, thousands of protesters along the parade route and nearby downtown streets booed, chanted slogans and carried placards condemning Bush's policies at home and abroad.


Some turned their back as the president drove slowly past. Others yelled, "George Bush (news - web sites), you can't hide. We charge you with genocide." Among the forest of protest signs, some read "Blood is on your hands" and "Iraq (news - web sites) is Arabic for Vietnam." Others called for electoral reform, gay rights, abortion rights and the use of renewable energy.


"There are a lot of people dying overseas for nothing and I'm here to get my voice heard," said Bill Coffelt, 40, an engineer from Fairfax, Va.

At least one snowball hit Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s limousine, and Bush's limousine sped up to get past the commotion.

I realize Fairfax County is basically Washington D.C. suburbs (I have family there), but a lot of people will just see the "Virginia" part and know that not all of us in the South are wingnuts! :)

13. I just got back from DC

I was with the DAWN (DC Anti-War Network) march. Great turnout. I don't know the number but it was in the thousands when we marched, especially after we converged with Code Pink.

I marched down to 14th and Pennsylvania Ave. with a very large and rowdy contingent of protesters after the official march ended. Security made the line to get into the parade route very long and slow.

I ended up leaving with a friend...after reading DC.indymedia.org it appears as if we just missed protesters tearing down parts of the gate along the route and police pepper spraying protesters. I'm glad I missed it in a way, but I also wish we had stuck around now. Maybe I wouldn't be saying that if I were recovering from pepperspray or in jail.

Anyway, I'm dead tired but I am so glad I went. I'm also glad to hear reports that our chants could be heard apparently during Bush's address.

I have been out of pocket for hours, so am just now logging on to get caught up on how protests in DC went. I read a story on Yahoo this morning that said there were about 300 CodePink protesters and only about 500 more total who were isolated miles away from the actual parade. I knew this was utter bullshit, so am eager to read the truth from those that were there!

"... the political polarization of Bush's first term accompanied him into his second Thursday as the presidential motorcade at the head of the inaugural parade was forced to roll past hundreds of anti-Bush demonstrators chanting slogans such as: "Not my president, not my war."

Protesters were of every age and background: families, children, students, retirees, artists, and accountants. Many were anti-war protesters but some had economic complaints or joined the demonstrations to support gay marriage rights or environmental protection.

Aidan Delgado, a 23-year-old US Army soldier who quit the military as a conscientious objector and was honorably discharged, according to DAWN (the DC Anti-War Network), said Bush has "bitterly divided this nation."
