Groups charge Bush is lying: Social Security ‘crisis’ is phony

Huge coalition moves to stop privatization

“Social Security ain’t broke and Wall Street won’t fix it!” shouted hundreds of marchers in front of the Stock Exchange, Chamber of Commerce and Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s office in San Francisco, Jan. 18. From there the Gray Panthers announced a Feb. 3 national “Day of Deluge,” when people are urged to swamp their Washington representatives with the demand: “No privatization of Social Security.”

The Bush administration created the lie of a “system in crisis” in order to wreck Social Security for the profit of Wall Street tycoons, demonstrators charged. But Bush has a tough fight on his hands. The AFL-CIO, the NAACP, NOW, the Alliance for Retired Americans, and others are bringing together a massive national grassroots coalition against administration plans to privatize Social Security.

“The Social Security battle will be huge,” Linda Chavez-Thompson, executive vice-president of the AFL-CIO, said at a Los Angeles dinner in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “This is one of the most successful family protection programs, not only in our country, but anywhere in the world. Yet when Bush looks at it, there are dollar signs in his eyes, and he sees a huge pool of cash that could make his ultra-rich buddies even richer.”

3. Your A-frame is broken

Bush and cronies are pulling a classic repair scam. You take your car in for its regular tune-up. The mechanic tells you he has bad news -- not only do you need a tune-up, but your A-frame is broken. You need to spend $1,000 to get the A-frame fixed. You haven't a clue what the A-frame does or even where it is, but you don't want to be driving an unsafe car. So not only do you get a tuneup but you get your A-frame "fixed." A really sharp repair scammer would also point out that your brakes were going to need work soon but don't need it now. You already knew about the brakes and are reassured that this is an honest mechanic, because otherwise he would have tried to do the brake work as well.

I had this kind of scam pulled on me once, in more naive feminist times. I just didn't believe that a female mechanic would pull this kind of thing, but she did. And I fell for it. Fortunately it doesn't take four years to replace your mechanic.

I don't intend to fall for this kind of scam again. Thanks for the post. It's nice to know that there are a lot of people and organized groups out there who see through it.

Social Security may need a small tweak or two and it needs the damned politicians to keep their grubby paws off of it.

It does NOT need a complete 'overhaul' and it certainly does not need to be dumped into the freakin stock market.

11. I am wondering, however,

if they know now that the government intends to default on the treasury bonds held by SS. As unlikely as that seems, that would certainly make the fund fail in 2018. I retire in 2013. This is not a comforting thought but I now question every motive and action of the government. That's what * has brought me to. If he said up was up, I'd get a second opinion.

13. I don't think they'll default. It would undo the government.

At least I don't think they'll default on purpose.

But I have no idea how the government plans to pay back the trillions in principle and interest social security is counting on in its projections. I think the last year is the biggest draw the SSA is banking on (assuming their "average" projection is accurate), something just above $1 trillion. (Got deficits?)
