'Morning After' Treatment Advised to Prevent AIDS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A "morning after" treatment for the AIDS virus can help prevent infection after a rape, contact with a contaminated needle or even a night of passion without a condom, U.S. health officials said on Thursday.

Taking drug cocktails for four weeks seems to greatly reduce the risk of becoming infected with the virus, which is transmitted through sex -- heterosexual and homosexual -- drug use and shared needles, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

These drug cocktails, called highly active antiretroviral therapy or HAART, are routinely taken for life by HIV-infected patients who can afford it and have access. HAART can keep a patient healthy despite infection with the deadly and incurable virus.

....Wow. This is significant. What is sad is the statement about "patients who can afford it and have access."

Is this HAART different from the normal drug cocktail used to treat AIDS? Or is this something different?

HAART means Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy.

Most people call it a drug cocktail because it is usually a mixture of three of more drugs.

There are four classes of drugs (NRTI, NNRTI, PI, and FI) that are used in combination to prevent HIV from "dodging" one drug by mutating.

Usually it'll be something like a PI based regimen which will be a Protease Inhibitor with two NRTI.

I take NNRTI based regimen with two NRTI (efivirenz, azt, 3tc).

But that is neither here nor there. The drugs are EXACTLY the same.

3. Sorry to be political here, but if you remember

Reagan would do nothing about AIDS..repbulican who not only wwnt along
with the plans for the world by the "select few" but implemented it.

The plan is to rid the world of 2/3 of the current population, so that the earth , energy, food can better support the remainingin 1/3.

The drug companies could certainly supply these drugs for pennies on
the dollar. But that is not the plan.

Think about it.

American drugs are so high, seniors can't afford the drugs. Mortality.
then Social Security won't have to pay out to dead seniors.

The population has Aids? tsk - more resources for those who will be left.

Not enough flu virus? tsk.

Send a generation of young men and women to get killed in a war.
Less babymaking - cutting out a generation.

40 million with no health insurance? well, they'll die earlier from
lack of care.

Yup. There are ways and means to accomplish getting rid of 2/3 of the
population of the earth.

Oh, how I wish I was rich enough to buy some neglected land in a rural area and live off of it.

I know how to do so, just never wanted to work that hard - and it would be a hard life.

Who knows? I may end up 'squatting' on public lands ( or paper company lands....).
