NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Two polling places for next week's Iraqi elections are being consolidated and moved to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds after community leaders raised concerns about security.
Mayor Bill Purcell on Thursday applauded the change, effective Saturday. The decision, he said, was made after city officials' concerns were relayed to the International Organization for Migration, which is conducting the overseas voting program.

The Tennessee move underscores the difficulty that local officials have had in quelling community fears about terrorism. Pre-election car bombings and other attacks have killed scores of people in Iraq, though no threats on Iraqi polling places have been reported here or in the other four cities.
The Rev. Joseph Breen of St. Edward Catholic Church, who had pressed for the move, said he was "greatly relieved." His church and school are near the Coleman center, and some parents had been planning to keep their children out of school next week because of safety concerns.
