Lawmaker Wants to Put 'French' Back in Fries

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - To get international help to rebuild Iraq, Congress may have to eat some French fries and French toast, according to Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

Saying it is time to put aside differences with France, the Texas Democrat circulated a letter on Monday urging the U.S. House of Representatives to put back the word "French" in fries and toast on House cafeteria and dining hall menus.

Lawmakers ordered them renamed "Freedom" fries and "Freedom" toast last spring, reflecting anger at France for its opposition to the U.S.-led war to topple Saddam Hussein as Iraq's president.

<snip>

this should really get the freeper's panties in a twist.

1. re-naming French Toast was TOTALLY un-American
being as it was named after the AMERICAN Joseph French

but I don't expect dumb-ass Repubes to care about that, not when they have such an important, urgent need to behave like 9-year-olds

with ALL due respect to 9-year-olds!

I just thought that this whole childish idea was more insulting to the people who actually fought for freedom, having the concept attached to potatoes or toasts.
The way fries are gonna be named is probably the last preocupation on my list (if it even is on the list).

edit: reply to post #2 although i agree also with #1 :)

19. That is a cheap shot.
None of the cretinous 9yo mall rats in my hood have invaded another mall to create one huge sale rack.

2. Do they really think the French are gonna care?
Give me a fucking break, unlike the US administration, the French government is composed of adults...(well, somewhat more mature than the crew of bullies sitting in the White House).

3. it is news like this
That makes me think of becoming a libertarian. Pressing issues of war, jobs, the environment... but we gotta vote on what to call our FOOD!!!!

And THIS is what we pay them for??? :wtf:

We all knew what a sick joke it was when they changed the name in the first place. It doesn't undo the sickness when they try to save face.

5. Yeah, right.
I'm sure this issue is enough to drive you libertarian.

The congresscritter that made this decision in the first place did it as a deliberate slap-in-the-face to the French govt and the French people. Same thing with Bush forcing the menus to be changed on AirForce one from French toast to Freedom toast.

These dumbass Republicans deserve a public rebuke for their childishness, and to date, I hadn't heard one. Letting it go and saying nothing indicates tacit approval.

11. it was just a fit of pique
Meant to be taken with a grain of salt. I was more outraged when it originally done, but see no reason not to reserve some anger for the reversal, seeing as it came too late. It is the kind of thing that fuelss legitimate criticism of the Democrats as being spineless.

4. That should piss off the French
They've hated the fact that we called 'em "French Fries" in the first place since they were a Belgian invention.

This will REALLY piss them off....

LOL

6. One of the most embarrassing moments
in US history. Including the bashing of the French car, the threat to dig up the American soldiers from WWII buried in France, etc. How many of those idiots realize that there are French troops working side by side with American troops in Afghanistan, Liberia, etc? At least the French have adults in charge or they would had a hissy fit and removed their troops and their talk radio hosts would have organized boycotts of McDonalds.

8. Could our country be any more disgraceful and absurd?
I think they should be forced to use the terms
"French French Fries & French French Toast"
in the House cafeteria.

14. Just a thought
They are changing the name back because they are sucking up to France for a UN resolution about Iraq. If the French blow them off again will there be another bill to change it back to freedom fries again ?

You could find it easier to call french fries, chips like we do in britain. :-)

"Fellatio Fries" has a nice ring to it, too...

If we're willing to let bygones be bygones, would you mind, er, guarding these oil wells for us?

20. This is one for the Onion:
>>>>>>>"But now, even former allies have revealed anti-U.S., pro-Them sentiments," Crandon said. "This includes the Them province of France and its lack of support for Operation Them Freedom, and England who—despite having helped the U.S. fight Them in the past—has recently been revealed as un-American by the ongoing Tony Blair investigation."
Experts remain unsure how long the current U.S.-Them rift will last, but President Bush said Tuesday that the U.S. will stand tall.
"We're Americans and They are not," Bush said. "We will not, under any circumstances, allow some alien, foreign one-of-Them to dictate how we're going to run our, or Their, lives. It's us and Them now, people."
One political expert stressed that, in spite of the ongoing climate of hostility, Americans have little to fear from Them.
"I wouldn't worry," Harvard political analyst Gregory Peters said. "Sure, the U.S. makes Them mad, but since we have unilateral military supremacy, it's not as if They can do anything about it." <<<<
