Gingrich Speech at CU Opposed
Event Would Violate School Policy, Some Students Contend

Newt Gingrich's scheduled speech at Catholic University next week is prompting criticism from students who contend that the appearance would violate the school's policy barring speakers who have espoused positions contrary to Vatican teachings.

Frank Lankey Jr., 20, political director for the College Democrats, said that Gingrich's support for the death penalty and his extramarital affair in the 1990s contradict church teachings and should prohibit him from appearing.

Last fall, organizers of an Italian film festival considered inviting actor-director Stanley Tucci to their event, but Catholic University officials objected because of his support for abortion rights organizations. In Gingrich's case, the college's student Republican organization invited the former House speaker to speak on politics and world affairs.

"If the university has a policy for what speakers need to represent in regards to church doctrine, they shouldn't pick and choose which teachings apply to which speakers," Lankey said....

Also, Newt is said to have favored oral sex and told colleagues he did so because "eatin' ain't cheatin'" -- he believed it gave him deniability of the "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" sort.

Bob Barr is another who's on his third wife and he was one of the main people behind Clinton's impeachment, worked on it for years and finally came up with Monicagate. Another big supporter of impeachment was Henry Hyde, known for past marital infidelity and having an illegitimate child. And then there was Bob Livingston! Newt left Congress rather quickly, probably in order to avoid all of his personal peccadilloes coming out in the midst of impeachment, and Bob was slated to be Speaker. But, wait! Someone revealed that Bob had something going on the side and he had to step aside. That's how we got Denny Hastert with the gavel in his hand.

We need to refresh our memories of these facts from time to time, not just for shits and giggles but lest we forget what slimeballs these men are!

it's just re-marriage that's not. and there are ways around that too. if the first marriage wasn't 'in the church', then it can be anulled - my aunt did this after 9 kids and about 20 years, because she eloped and never had a church wedding. Remarried, and it was all okey-dokey with the church. Not a lot of people are aware of this loophole - But it helps if your brothers are priests...

9. Protesting Newt

I've just sent an e-mail to Victor Lakas, the Catholic University spokesman who said in the article that Newt was "not a public advocate for adultery", telling him that it was a disingenuous thing to say, and that Gingrich's repeated instances of adultery constituted tacit advocacy of the practice.

E-mails to Victor Lakas can be sent to the CU Public Affairs office. I have the e-mail address but am still a newbie here so don't know if I'm allowed to post it.

I've also written to the Washington Post with my thoughts. God, Gingrich pisses me off. I was born and raised in Georgia and even though I've lived in England for nearly 20 years, that lying, hypocritical sack of shit still has the ability to rile me up. Family values, my ass.

I'm almost looking forward to him having a run for the Repug nomination in 2008 just for the pleasure of seeing him raked over the coals and all his dirty laundry spread out for the world to see.

just like writing to news media people, CU PUBLIC AFFAIRS office is the link between US, the PUBLIC, and CU.....added PLUS, if you post the spokespersons EMAIL for us...many more DUers will conveniently avail themselves of the opportunity to write a note...DUers frequently post lists of emails for WP, and other media people by name....politicians emails, organizational leaders emails, are all OK...

What the U.S. bishops have said

Since the late 1970s, when U.S. Supreme Court decisions led to the resumption of executions in the U.S. after a decade-long hiatus, the nation's Catholic bishops have voiced strong opposition to the death penalty.

The basic rationale for the bishops' position is contained in their 1980 "Statement on Capital Punishment," in which they stated that, "in the conditions of contemporary American society, the legitimate purposes of punishment do not justify the imposition of the death penalty."

Abolition of capital punishment, the bishops said, would do the following:

* It would reaffirm the unique worth and dignity of each person from the moment of conception, as a creature made in the image and likeness of God.

* It would underscore the conviction that God is the Lord of life, and would remove any ambiguity as to the Church's affirmation of the sanctity of human life in all its stages, including the unborn, the aged and the infirm.

* It would be in accordance with the example of Jesus, who both taught and practiced forgiveness.

at the present is:

"If bloodless means are sufficient to defend human lives against an aggressor and to protect public order and the safety of persons, public authority must limit itself to such means, because they better correspond to the concrete conditions of the common good and are more in conformity to the dignity of the human person."

"John Paul II wrote (in 1995) that execution is only appropriate "in cases of absolute necessity, in other words, when it would not be possible otherwise to defend society. Today, however, as a result of steady immprovement in the organization of the penal system, such cases are very rare, if not practically nonexistent."

While this would not apply to Ted Bundy when he was executed after conviction in Florida, he managed to escape from police custody not once but twice while I believe on trial. After the second escape, he went to Florida where he murdered several more college girls and I think a 12 year old. Had he been convicted and was awaiting sentencing when he escaped, and someone caught him loose in the wilds of Utah and could not possibly bring him in on his own, that might be an example of where someone would be morally justified in shooting him either in self-defense or because he simply could not let him go without significantly risking the deaths of more people as per the above. My example is a bit far fetched of course. I think that it is an 'exception' with virtually no examples since the state executes people while they are no longer a threat to society.

The current Pope in reality has probably been the strongest opponent to the death penalty within the Catholic Church ever. He committed that opposition to official Church teachings in 1995 after consultation with the world's RC bishops, but it clearly came from his own viewpoint. I believe that the Vatican currently contacts US governors before any execution asking them to commute the sentence to LWOP.

Catholics actually protested against KILLING ted....the main reasoning was that he should be kept locked up and STUDIED to find out what make people so psychotic...and those studies would help us prevent others from doing the same...if we KILL them, how will we ever know what creates such monsters....PLUS, one of victims CATHOLIC mother forgave ted, and begged for his life....

It's a MAJOR difference between Catholics and other religions...CATHOLICS do not seek revenge....

In principle, Gingrich is just another sinner who has no business being around any religious institution. In practice, however, he fits into the American version of the Taliban. This will be a good indicator of whether the Catholic leadership actually stands up for its principles, or whether it is just another Neo-Con outlet.

It's about time someone finally called the Catholic Church on this hypocritical little double-standard. According to the offical Vatican position, the death penalty is just as wrong as abortion. By choosing to focus their political attention only on issues that break down along partisan lines (like abortion), the Catholic Church is effectively doing nothing more than playing partisan politics.

can we get some prominent Catholic commentator to weigh in on this? It is high time that these hypocrites be held up to PUBLIC SHAME. It is totally outrageous that CU dared to invite Gingrich in the first place and shows that they are completely unconcerned that they are hypocrites. They need a good public airing of this so the stench gets uncomfortable.
