BAGHDAD — A car bomb killed at least 14 Shiite worshippers and wounded 40 others gathered for a Muslim holy day celebration at a Baghdad mosque Friday, while insurgents in Ramadi publicly beheaded an Iraqi soldier in the latest round of preelection violence.
Another car bomb, in a town south of Baghdad, killed as many as a dozen people, while a video released on an Islamic militant Web site showed insurgents beheading two more Iraqi men who worked at an American military base.
Despite the ongoing violence, U.S. and Iraqi interim government officials insist the Jan. 30 vote for parliamentary and provincial offices will go on.
The car bomb at the al-Taf mosque in southwestern Baghdad exploded as worshipers were leaving morning services for Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, which comes each year at the time of the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, Islam's holiest city, in Saudi Arabia.
