Reporter Testifies In Judge's Libel Suit Against Boston Herald
BOSTON -- A Boston Herald reporter being sued for libel by a judge who says the newspaper portrayed him as callous toward a rape victim said he gave the judge an opportunity to comment for the article, but he refused.
An attorney for Superior Court Judge Ernest Murphy questioned whether David Wedge's attempt to reach Murphy through a court officer was sufficient, given the charges in the story.
"The story was ready to go," Wedge said on Tuesday. "We tried to give him the opportunity to comment. He declined the opportunity."

Wedge was the lead reporter on a February 2002 story about Superior Court Judge Ernest Murphy in which Murphy was quoted saying of a 14-year-old rape victim, "Tell her to get over it." Murphy denies saying that.
