HOLMESVILLE – Marion D. Weaver, a 58-year-old independent truck driver from Benton, was arrested Tuesday, accused of murdering an Apple Creek man who was with about 10 others, ages 15 to 23, throwing tomatoes at passing vehicles from a cornfield Sept. 1.

After Weaver’s Cadillac reportedly was hit by tomatoes, he left the area along Rt. 241 north of Mount Hope and returned a short time later, Zimmerly said. Weaver then fired three to five shotgun rounds into the cornfield, striking Steven L. Keim, 23, who later died in Pomerene Hospital at Millersburg.

Weaver, who delivered ice to Amish families, was identified as a suspect shortly after the Sept. 1 shooting, thanks in part to tips from the public, Zimmerly said.

“The 23-year-old boy, Steve Keim, that got shot – his father, Reuben, and Marion were close friends,” Miller said. “They went together on hunting and fishing trips.
