The marble rotunda at the National Archives will reopen tomorrow after two years of renovations designed to make the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence more accessible to visitors and less obscured by distance, awkward angles and green-tinted glass.
Most of the structural changes inside the 75-foot-high rotunda aim to enhance the public views of the glass-encased, animal-skin parchments. Instead of hanging flat on the walls or resting within tabletop displays, the new parchment cases are positioned at easier-to-read angles -- the bottom edges of the document cases are about 28 inches from the floor, and they slant upward at 25-degree angles.
The glass that protects the documents is clearer, thinner and less reflective, and the documents themselves were cleaned and partially restored. The steep walkway leading to the display cases and the stairs in front of the cabinets are gone, allowing wheelchair access to the documents for the first time.
