SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Lockheed Martin again was the largest recipient of U.S. Defense Department contracts in 2004, but the company's total was a decrease from the fiscal 2003, the Pentagon said Thursday evening.
Lockheed, the world's largest defense contractor, received $20.7 billion in contracts. "There were a lot of opportunities in 2004," said Lockheed spokesman Tom Jurkowsky.
The Bethesda, Md.-based company received contracts for a Navy ship designed to fight in coastal waters and received considerable government information technology related work in 2004. Lockheed has also been the lead contractor on the Air Force's next fighter aircraft and is leading another joint service fighter program, which is the biggest defense contract ever at more than $200 billion
