House Passes Ban on Internet Access Tax

WASHINGTON - Connections to the Internet would remain tax-free under a bill the House passed Wednesday.



The legislation, passed with bipartisan support, makes permanent a ban on taxing Internet connections. A temporary ban on the taxes, first enacted in 1998, runs out on Nov. 1.

3. That's sales tax. They're talking about an access tax.

You still may be liable for sales taxes on Internet purchases, depending in which state you live.

2. I wish they'd get rid of all those silly telephone related taxes

Get revenue from some combination of income, property, and sales taxes, but don't have all these silly "boutique" taxes.

Check out your next telephone bill - the taxes are about 20% of your bill.

I admit I just pay the bill. I kind of gave-up and am a bit passive on this one.

7. This about the only thing that the GOP House has done that I agree with

Small dialup ISPs are merging into bigger ones or going out of buisness. DSL, cable access are still too high in price for many folks and in many locations it is impossible to even plug into a broadband network.

Good! An access fee would only be a flat tax which will hurt the poor and the middle class more than anyone else.
