Islamic Web Site Claims U.S. Soldier Captured, Threat To Behead Him
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 01:40 PM by Purveyor
(02-01) 09:40 PST BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) --

Iraqi militants claimed in a Web statement Tuesday to have taken an American soldier hostage and threatened to behead him in 72 hours unless the Americans release Iraqi prisoners.

The posting, on a Web site that frequently carried militants' statements, included a photo of what appeared to be an American soldier in desert fatigues seated with his hands tied behind his back. A gun barrel was pointed at his head, and he is seated in front of a black banner emblazoned with the Islamic profession of faith, "There is no god but God and Muhammad is His prophet."

"Our mujahadeen heroes of Iraq's Jihadi Battalion were able to capture American military man John Adam after killing a number of his comrades and capturing the rest," said the statement, signed by the "Mujahedeen Brigades."

"God willing, we will behead him if our female and male prisoners are not released from U.S. prisons within the maximum period of 72 hours from the time this statement has been released," the statement said.

25. That "third world dump" with the solid gold faucets
has the Pentagon crying UNCLE.

When they war-gamed the Iraq war,
Paul van Riper (who played Saddam)
won.
he kicked ass so bad that they had to start again
and then they told him point blank that he was supposed to lose
and he had better do so.

Never underestimate your enemy.
Those chips would are designed specifically
(for lost pets and lost children)
to guide people to your location .
A vet could probably blow your entire mission.

15. The Nick Berg video website tracked back
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 01:25 PM by DulceDecorum
to a site owned by a company that bears the Royal Arms.
The Royal Arms is a seal of approval given by
Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth,
and it is NOT easy to come by.

Having the Royal Arms means that the company is
On Her Majesty's Service.
It is a big deal.
And so was the Nick Berg beheading video.

On Edit:
Apparently, the website that is carrying this latest video
is known as www.ansarnet.ws
This type of website is invariably linked to rightwinguts.

DEMAND for ANSWERS:
Why are ISPs forced to carry terrorist web sites?
Islamist Terrorism in the USA -- on the Internet hosted by American ISPs.
ISPs are being forced by someone in the U.S. Government to carry websites devoted to terrorism. These organizations have been officially designated by the U.S. Dept. of Justice as terrorist. They have websites hosted by American ISPs, which collect money for terror and recruit in direct violation of U.S. laws!

19. Many Iraqi prisoners are just kids who were out after curfew
or otherwise were in the wrong place at the wrong time. In other words, there is no security need to hold many of those Iraqi prisoners. I condemn the threats to behead this soldier, as that is not legitimate under the Geneva Conventions*. Prisoner exchange is a normal part of warfare. We should offer up several non-violent Iraqi prisoners in exchange for this soldier's release.

*Please do not lecture me about our abuses and torture of prisoners. I am aware of it, and all one has to do is search the archives where you will find dozens of posts of mine condemning the soldiers who do it and the commanding officers and civilians who authorized it. Torture and death threats are wrong, no matter who does it. To say that the other side does not have to follow the rules just because we don't is akin to two children in a schoolyard being brought in to the principal's office, arguing over "who started it".

27. I don't think Bush would mind a soldier beheading
Politically speaking anyway. Regardless of what his personal reactions were, the Bush administration would probably see it as a political plus at this time (i.e. SOTU). It would make it very difficult to take an anti-war, or pro-withdrawal position, while the rally round the flag effect was intense. Kennedy's call for a withdrawal timetable could be put slapped down with appeals to avenge this soldier.

From the same point of view, it doesn't seem politically smart from the Iraqi resistance point of view. But, with everything the Bush administration has done to Iraq, it may be that they too are responding more to emotion than political calculations.

As always, the possibility of a "black op" can't be excluded, although these thoughts tend to be strictly in the realm of speculation.

I take it you mean it would be bad for the Iraqi resistance, not the Bush administration (from a western standpoint, who knows how anything plays in Iraq itself). I tend to agree, if that is the case.

36. That could be, too.
It is hard to predict the reaction of the public. The committed on either the pro-invasion or anti-invasion side could probably be expected to harden their positions, it is the middle that is hard to predict. I think the short term effect would be more "rally round the flag", but the mid to longer term effect might be "what are we still doing there anyway?".

I know I'm a first time poster and everyone is going to think I'm a disruptor, I'm actually a very frequent visitor to this site and I'm finally posting today because I think I'm the only one on this thread, possibly in all of DU who thinks that that is one seriously FAKE SOLDIER.
Seriously, it looks like a mannequin, or even an Arab with face paint on. Am I the only one who sees that? Also the site only showed an image, not video like these militants normally show that would at least indicate some kind of movement, not to mention that the flak jacket is unlike anything I've ever seen on a U.S. soldier.
Well, go ahead, let me have it.
By the way, lets all pray that I'm right.

98. That's not the point. The point is that this is what you can expect when
you launch an unprovoked invasion of a disarmed, UN compliant country based on lies. This is what you should expect when you drop 500 ton bombs, incinerate people with napalm and white phosphorous and murder 100,000 civilians.

Beheadin is far more humane than what we have done to these people.

I refuse to accept the whining about beheadings or suicide bombers. We have done faaaaar worse and we have been far more barbaric.

53. Possibly...
I would even venture to give a seriously far out guess that this picture could have been taken outside of Iraq, outside of the Middle East even, remember the college kids from Cali who staged a beheading and got it posted to a website? My reasoning is that the photographer is careful not to include the hand holding the rifle in the picture, possibly a dead giveaway that this may be a hoax by non-arabs.

FREQUENTLY? Sounds like manufacture propaganda to inflame - now what kind of people would want to do such a thing? SO this website frequently carries militants statements? Hmmm. Seems they all warrant a much closer look now...

The posting, on a Web site that frequently carried militants' statements, included a photo of what that statement said was an American soldier, (snip)

A gun barrel was pointed at his head, and behind him on the wall is a black banner emblazoned with the Islamic profession of faith, "There is no god but God and Muhammad is His prophet."

66. Iraqi President: U.S. Troops Should Stay
By MARIAM FAM, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq (news - web sites)'s president said Tuesday it would be "complete nonsense" to ask foreign troops to leave the country now, although some could depart by year's end. Officials began the final vote tally from elections to produce a government to confront the insurgency.

A militant group claimed in a Web statement that it had taken an American soldier hostage and threatened to kill him within 72 hours unless Iraqi prisoners are freed. The Web posting included a photo of a bound man in desert fatigues with an automatic rifle pointed at his head.

The claim's authenticity could not be immediately verified. A U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, Marine Sgt. Salju K. Thomas, said "we are currently looking into" the claim.

DUBAI (Reuters) - A little-known Iraqi insurgent group said on Tuesday it was holding a U.S. soldier and threatened to kill him within 72 hours if Iraqi prisoners were not released, according to an Internet statement.
"Our mujahideen ... have managed to capture the American soldier John Adam after killing a number of his colleagues," said the Mujahideen Squadrons in the undated statement.

It carried a picture appearing to show a U.S. soldier sitting in front of a black banner with a rifle pointed at his head. The authenticity of the claim, which did not say where the man was seized, could not be verified.

"We will cut his throat in 72 hours if our male and female prisoners in the occupation jails are not released," it said.

A group using the same name, Mujahideen Squadrons, last month claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of a Brazilian engineer in Iraq.

But questions were raised about the authenticity of a photo purporting to show a hostage with a gun to his head. The figure in the photo appeared stiff and expressionless.
