Utah Amending Gay Marriage Ban Problems
SALT LAKE CITY - After rushing to write a ban on gay marriage into the state constitution, Utah legislators are stepping back to repair some of the damage the law could deal other kinds of domestic partners.

<snip>

Utah's Legislature — overwhelmingly Republican and Mormon, and one of the most conservative bodies in the nation — ignored warnings from the state's Republican attorney general that the amendment went too far.

<snip>
Now, in a moment of sober reflection, the same lawmakers are looking at giving back to adults who live together but are ineligible to marry — a category that includes same-sex couples — some of the rights of husband and wife.

"It addresses the need of persons who may have some relationship other than marriage to delegate responsibilities to each other," said Utah Republican Sen. Greg Bell.

Watch this happen in the 10 other states who rushed to a ban. People will see just what they voted for.

1. Should we oppose this measure to make them feel the pain?
After all, how can the fundamentalists sympathize if they don't get to experience how it feels to be on the receiving end?

2. What a bunch of hypocrites.

"Family values" my ass. I say, Repugs want to hang this crap on the family values banner, then they're morally obliged to go for it full bore. Going on that line of thinking....

1) Adultery is a sin, and should be punished by law. It breaks up families and can introduce STDs into relationships.

2) Divorce is a sin - "What God has joined together let no man put asunder." It breaks up families and therefore should be punished by law. No one may divorce. If a husband or wife is abusive, they go to jail.

3) Men or women who do not make good on their child support payments should be punished by law. Hurts the sanctity of the family. They go to jail and the state sells their stuff to support their kids.

4) All those living without the benefit of marriage are not permitted to gain benefit usually accorded to married people. Sinful, dontcha know.

I say, time for them to put up or shut up - though we know they won't. Problem is, these laws might actually AFFECT the people in power, so of course they can't do it.

So, so sick of the double standard.

3. I wonder if they are retracting this law because it affected polygamists

in addition to gay couples. Polygamists are a big part of the Republican base in Utah.

4. Bill to Fix Utah Gay-Marriage Ban Loses
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - After rushing to write a ban on gay marriage into the state constitution last year, Utah legislators are in no hurry to repair damage the law could deal other kinds of domestic partners.

The Senate overwhelmingly voted Tuesday to kill a bill that would have eased restrictions imposed by the gay marriage ban. The legislation came under fire from conservative lobby groups in this heavily Republican state where anything seen as advancing gay rights is often doomed to failure.

Taken literally, the gay marriage ban could deny hospital visitation or survivor's property rights to children being brought up by grandparents, or to senior citizens who live together but do not marry for financial reasons. Siblings living in the same household also could find themselves without customary rights.

13. on the positive side the Utah legislature did pass two resolutions
one the urges the passage of Bush's play to eliminate SS AND one telling the US Senate to approve all of Bush's judicial nominations.

Both sight unseen.

What bozos.

12. In Utah, marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman...
...and a woman and a woman and a woman and a...

:evilgrin:

(And, in case you think I'm bashing the LDS as an institution, keep in mind that there are a lot of renegade Mormons who still practice "the old ways," no matter what the institutional Mormon church itself says, and to whom the authorities turn a blind eye.)
