Tsunami toll now nearly 300,000
The number of people presumed dead in December's earthquake and tsunami rose to more than 290,000 today, with Indonesian authorities announcing a further increase in the number of dead.

Indonesia was hardest-hit by the December 26 quake and tsunamis, with a total 237,071 people listed as dead or missing, the health ministry said.

A health ministry official said the 127,774 people listed as missing but who almost certainly perished would only be considered dead after one year.

Thailand's toll remained at 5,393 confirmed dead. A further 3,071 people were listed as missing, more than 1,000 of them foreigners.

The toll in Sri Lanka, which was second hardest hit by the catastrophe, stood at 30,957, according to the Centre for National Operations.

The number of people listed as missing was 5,637, but many were expected to be among those never formally identified, hurriedly buried and included in the confirmed death toll.

In neighbouring India, the official death toll has reached 10,749 with 5,640 still reported missing and feared dead.

1. Why hasn't this been on the MSM?
I don't watch much, but most of the attention is back on Bush and Michael Jackson from what I see.

5. What I find odd
is the number of Americans has not been mentioned by the MSM, of course I could have missed it. But it seems that no one cares.

9. And what about the other countries...
who reached out to us when we lost over 3,000? I know some European countries lost more than that and I don't think we've even mentioned anything about it except in a little snippet here and there on the news.

10. Because it might lead to feelings of compassion
And if Americans start feeling compassion, they might start feeling it for the Iraqi children and the Iraqi women and the Iraqi men. At least that's my feeling on why we aren't hearing about it, or more importantly, seeing it. Kind of like the reason we don't see the real video footage from Iraq.

8. Possibly and certainly the CIA contributed to Bush's failure...
...to respond until four days after the event. That is where a lot of the of deaths and missing could have been avoided had immediate action and rescue mobilization taken place. Instead, it there was delay, denial and even political positioning regarding assistance and money for rescue relief. I see that as crass eugenics by this administration.

11. Wow. Right up there with Bangladesh 1970
when as many as half a million may have perished in the cyclone of Nov. 1970.
