Animal rights activist sells her skin for charity

The British founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's biggest animal rights group, is auctioning off a lizard tattoo on her right arm - with proceeds going to the charity.

Billed as "waterproof and weathered" and "suitable for making into a wallet or watch strap", the tattoo is being offered on website eBay to draw attention to the plight suffered by skinned animals.

"It's the only skin you can wear and use with the express permission of the original owner," Ingrid Newkirk said of her tattoo.

4. I know them; they will usually say well the animal was
already used for food so it is not an ethical problem to use their skin for shoes, purses, etc.

16. Which is wrong because many animals
are killed just for their hide. There are alternatives to leather for belts shoes etc. Ads can be found on the internet and in magazines.

8. The mirror, reflects more than the skin of those guilty.
The surface of this issue is more apparent the further it goes down the path. One wonders how much a good lather costs nowadays, if one wants their hairs trimmed in public.

7. a vegetarian does not 'eat ' meat...
...which is a choice in the same way wearing leather is.

I eat meat and wear leather. If I wasn't such a cheap, lazy bastard without any backbone......I would probably do neither.

18. It's all a matter of steps and connecting the dots
Some vegetarians never get there. But it's all about steps and seeing the correlation between what we eat and what we wear. When I was vegetarian, I still wore leather because I hadn't connected the dots. But once I had put it altogether, I went vegan and stopped supporting that industry. It took a while to phase the leather out of my wardrobe, so I still wore leather shoes for a while but did not purchase anymore. I now am completely animal-product free.

22. You should read the definition of "vegetarian". "eat" is the key word.
A vegetarian is a person who does not eat meat or fish. They may do this because they think it is wrong to kill animals. Or because they think eating meat is bad for the body. Another reason people say they are vegetarians is because it is good for the the world. This is because land used for animals could be used to grow food.

Some vegetarians do eat or drink things that come from animals. Like milk and cheese. Some may also use things made from animals like leather. Some people who eat fish but not meat may also say they are a vegetarian. People who eat only fruit and vegetables are called vegans. Vegans also often will not use animal products like leather.

12. what's the obsession with the "purity" of a vegetarian? hypocrite? why?
Why are some people so persistent in proving that if a vegetarian does one thing like use leather (or so much as sit on it in a car seat) that this proves beyond a doubt that their ideas are wrong and all positive efforts are thereby negated and now we've just proven it's right to conclude now that everyone should eat meat?

Who comes up with this shit?
Why are so many people so ready to jump on this bandwagon of attacking those who decide to at least attempt help to lessen animal suffering?
Was it on some radio talk show or something?

If someone wants to NOT support industries that harm animals, I say if they are vegetarian for even ONE single DAY then more power to them!
Or if someone just decides to buy one less leather jacket GREAT!
Any help is good help.
But why do some insist if you are not "pure" 100% head to toe for your entire history on earth then, it's concluded you are wrong and everyone should just support harming animals??

Who comes up with this shit?

That's like saying if you give a little of you money to charity, and not all of your money ,then your efforts to help are not valid and you are a hypocrite and we can all conclude that helping people through a charitable contribution is without a doubt wrong.

who comes up with this shit?

Who decreed that someone must be pure and provide proof of purity for that person to attempt to move in a direction in their life that may be INTENDED to rebel against antiquated attitudes about animal use and abuse?
Where is it written?

a wise man once said: " nobody's perfect--and you don't have to be perfect to have a good idea"
Now that was one very wise man.

Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 07:01 AM by Petrushka
. . . it's disgusting when a headline mentions "sells her skin" and the first thing that pops into my grandmotherly head is, "Oh, dear me! Gotta read what that one's about. Probably some broad becoming a hooker."
:silly:

20. I have to say I really don't understand the hostility one
encounters with respect to animal rights. Perhaps the simple act of being a vegetarian makes people defensive?

23. Newkirk's a little strange.
But I support much of what the animal rights movement does- at least in regards to testing cosmetics, inhumane factory farming, inhumane slaughter of animals, etc.
