Congressman Vows to Salute to Iraq Voters (inking finger for SOU tonight)
Congressman Vows to Salute to Iraq Voters

Wed Feb 2, 3:09 AM ET White House - AP

WASHINGTON - Rep. Bobby Jindal is planning to demonstrate solidarity with Iraqi voters by dipping a finger in purple ink before President Bush (news - web sites)'s State of the Union speech Wednesday.

Bush is delivering his speech to a joint session of Congress and a nationwide television audience three days after Iraq (news - web sites)'s first free national elections in decades.

Iraqis who participated in Sunday's elections had a finger stained with purple ink to prove they had voted.

In a letter to be circulated Wednesday among fellow lawmakers, Jindal, R-La., said he would have ink available for anyone attending the speech who wanted to make a gesture of support for Iraqis and "people throughout the world who seek freedom."

How about showing solidarity by finding the $9B the administration "can't find"?

2. Just like a repuke..................
surround yourself in symbolism to appear that you're doing the right thing. Let's see, they wrap themselves in the flag all the time, then shit on the Constitution. We can't forget their ultimate sacrifice to America and it's soldiers with "Freedom Fries". Of course there were the ever present "band-aid purple hearts" at the Puke Convention to honor those that actually DID serve their country.

Yep, symbolism. It's one of the few things the Repukes are good at. They certainly can't govern a country worth a damn.

Bush would never have gotten into the White House.

(Though I heard that they were using laptops to "tabulate" the votes in Iraq. I wondered what program they used.)

5. How did I know this?
I just went and checked his bio to see if there was any military service in it, and - gosh, there isn't!

But it's sweet that he's willing to make an empty gesture of support, anyway. I bet he's got a yellow ribbon magnet on his car, too.

10. Oh I hope they all raise their right hands in a salute
I'd love to see them all raising their right arms at a slant.

A big Sig Heil salute of stupidity, as if the Iraq vote was any different than the "democratic vote" in Vietnam just prior to the giant escalation of that war.

11. That's so over the top, these folks are just creepy and freaky. Why
don't they dip their finger in the blood of the dead children and women of Iraq to get to the point where they can exploit innocent life by dipping their pampered well manicured hand into some ink. I couldn't watch this ridiculous arrogant display if I was forced to. How can Bush even keep a straight face with such parlor trick buffoonery. We really do have boy-children running the world.

24. No joke, they are pompous ingrates - I saw them all on C-Span last night
Every time I flipped by it, there seemed to be another republican extolling the virtues of freedom that have been brought to the Iraqi people.

Maybe I missed it, but don't recall too many of these, we need to bring freedom to the masses speeches by republicans prior to the invasion of Iraq. Even when we went into Afghanistsan no one was running around extolling the virtues of making Afghanis free. It was only after they voted that republicans began their dancing in the streets to proclaim how great the US was (because that's really what they are doing) for bringing freedom to the world.

Meanwhile back in the world todays Op-Ed piece in the NY Times by Nicholas Kristof is about Darfur and contains the following paragraph:

The result was a U.N. commission's 176-page report, released this week, that documents a series of crimes against humanity: people in Darfur crucified or thrown into fires, victims having their eyes gouged out or being dragged on the ground by camels, women and girls kept naked in rape camps, huts burned with children inside, and women forced to hand over their baby sons to be killed.

"It is undeniable that mass killings occurred in Darfur and that the killings were perpetrated by the government forces" and by a government-sponsored militia, the report said.

Link: <http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/02/opinion/02kristof.html?hp>

Crimes against humanity, rape camps, womens babies being killed. What country did we just invade to save their people from those exact things.

So forgive my cynacism, but where were the members of the house yesterday who were standing up and saying that we needed to spread freedom to the Sudan?

37. They are very fond of wearing purple symbols they didnt earn...
Those Iraqis who walked around with that finger were possibly marking themselves for violence. That takes guts.

Those spineless, unamerican warmongers in Congress who would DARE put purple on their fingers in some faux display of solidarity not only show their moral COWARDICE, but in effect mock those who actually wore that mark justly.

They make me absolutely SICK to my stomach.

The SOTU speech will be a BFEE call to arms to invade even more countries. Now that they feel like they have gotten away with this scam, there will be no upper limit to hubris. Expect purple ribbons and all sorts of other foolish propaganda soon. And a draft.
