Republicans wants White House to improve sales pitch for $87 billion Iraq

Republican lawmakers pressed the White House on Wednesday to do a more forceful job of publicly selling its request for $87 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan as President Bush formally sent the plan to Congress.

Though Bush is likely to get largely what he wants with broad bipartisan support, GOP legislators also served notice that they would examine it closely -- and might make some changes.

The comments underscored the political challenges Bush's proposal has faced since he announced the proposal Sept. 7 in nationally televised address.

Some Republicans have flinched at the cost, which will only add to record federal deficits already expected to exceed $400 billion this year and next.

1. oh, that's right -
it's time for * to "roll out the new product" - you know that thing that happens after August :puke:

http://www.msnbc.com/modules/chrismatthews/100402.asp

Ms. VANDEN HEUVEL: But, listen, Andrew Card, the assistant the president, made clear this was a product. War was a product that they were going to roll out. They are masters of media manipulation. Karl Rove, the president's guru, has talked about the war as the wedge issue. It's taken off the ravaged pension accounts, the economy, rising poverty, unemployment. He's a master.

Hey guys, remember the reconstruction I said was going well?
Well, it's in the crapper now, and I need more money.
The deficit that's threatening to choke off the recovery?
Don't worry, be happy!

This is not an inspiring message.

3. what $87 billion could buy
according to Michael Moore, it's enough to erase the budget deficits of all 50 states.

it's enough to give $10,000 to every unemployed person in the US.

it'd do wonders for Amtrak, Americorps, or No Child Left Behind.

the list is endless.

this administration's priorities are all f*cked. and imho the dems should go to the mat to stop this one.
