The CIA has reportedly issued a classified report reversing its assessment before the Iraq war that Saddam Hussein's regime possessed weapons of mass destruction.
It says now that Iraq abandoned chemical arms program in 1991, the Los Angeles Times reported today.
The report was the first official acknowledgement by the spy agency that its pre-war judgments were incorrect, but the paper was a low-level document intended to update its files, not meant to be viewed by senior US officials, including President George W Bush, a CIA official told the newspaper.
"It's basically updating the books so the information on the shelf is the most current," said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
