Dozens of law enforcement officers this morning protested Broward State Attorney Michael Satz's investigation into allegations that Broward Sheriff's Office deputies falsified crime reports.
A sea of officers in red T-shirts that said, ''Satz unfair to cops'' swarmed the courthouse Wednesday morning just minutes before a former Weston BSO detective, Chris Thieman, was scheduled to appear before Broward Circuit Court Judge Michael Kaplan.
''Let's be crystal clear, we do not condone misconduct by officers of any kind,'' said Broward Police Benevolent Association Senior Vice President Patrick Hanrahan. ``But we also feel our officers deserve what the lowliest criminal receives, a fair and impartial investigation free from political grandstanding by the State Attorney's Office.''
...
''We respect every law-abiding deputy at BSO. But what these few protesters don't want to believe is that the allegations against the deputies --- allegations first brought to us by the sheriff's department --- are serious,,'' said Ron Ishoy, communications manager for the State Attorney's Office. ``Including deputies falsely accusing people of crimes they didn't commit as well as deputies fabricating confessions.''
