ALA Files Amici Curiae Brief Supporting Former FBI Translator
-- 2/2/2005
BreakingNews > News

The American Library Association (ALA) has joined other non-profit organizations in filing an amici curiae brief supporting of FBI translator Sibel Edmonds, who claimed she was fired in retaliation for reporting misconduct and security breaches. The American Civil Liberties Union has asked the D.C. Court of Appeals to reinstate the case, arguing that the government abused the "state secrets privilege" when it retrospectively classified information that was already made public in unclassified Congressional briefings. "America's librarians are continually working to enhance public access to government information because such access is essential to preserve a democratic society," said Emily Sheketoff, executive director of the ALA Washington Office. "The government's decision to classify information that had been publicly available could be an abuse of the state secrets privilege. This action has a chilling effect on efforts to encourage government transparency."

1. This is excellent news. I hope you repost in the 9/11 Forum
Since you can't, according to the LBN posting rules, have Sibel Edmonds' name in the thread title, it will be hard to find for those following 9/11-related developments once it fades from the LBN forum. In the 9/11 Forum you can choose a title with her name and it will continue to be visible to the people who most want to know about it.

and thanks!

4. Librarians as the new radicals.
Says something about the depths to which we have fallen.

Thank you, librarians.

7. ??? They've ALWAYS been "radicals"
Pretty much always. Pro-censorship/ultra-conservative librarians are few and far between, and always have been. The ALA has a code of ethics librarians are supposed to adhere to.
