Public-access TV porn under fire
Seattle network set to consider whether to end 'Mike Hunt TV'

By KERY MURAKAMI
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Flip the channels after midnight, past Nick at Nite and the infomercials. If you stumble upon the Seattle area's public-access channel, you might see a man and a woman having sex in a hot tub, followed by another man and woman doing it in a kitchen.

(snip)

Mike Aivaz, whose porn show may be kicked off the air by the Seattle Community Access Network, stands in front of the SCAN studio.

Now questions are being raised again over whether the graphic clips taken from porn movies should be allowed to appear on public-access television. The Seattle Community Access Network, which runs the public-access station for King and south Snohomish counties, has warned Mike Aivaz that his show "Mike Hunt TV" will be yanked off the air if he does not stop airing "the presentation of actual sex acts."

Aivaz says that's censorship, particularly on a channel meant to give access to the airwaves for programming outside the mainstream.

1. I hate porn
I don't think it's a victimless crime. I think it degrades women. But I don't believe in censorship. Period.

6. My several female friends who act in porn couldn't disagree with you more.
None of them feel victimized or degraded.

In fact, they feel well paid, and flattered.

And I know many women who are porn consumers and don't feel degraded either.

I think you have simply drunk the right-wing kool-aide.

8. let me guess, you're male
I am female, and I say it degrades me.

I also say I oppose censorship. So quit accusing me of drinking the koolaid, because in saying something like that you are trying to silence me.

12. Yep...
Male. Not that this actually matters as the human condition transcends sex.

I'm so sorry for you that something that somebody else does and enjoys bothers you so much that you feel degraded. But, you need to own your reaction, and realize that it is both irrational and all in your head.

I'm not trying to silence you, just pointing out that you bought the whole sick right-wing moral agenda. Sexuality is how they mean to control us and make us conform, and they have their claws deeply into you.

I think it is safe to say that I know more women in the "adult entertainment industry" than anybody you know, and I know of very few who feel that they were in any way degraded or victimized by their work.

2. the end result could be no public access
Generally speaking, cable operators may not control the content of programming on public access channels with the exception that the cable operator may refuse to transmit a public access program, or a portion of the program, which the cable operator reasonably believes contains obscenity. While this may be a laudable concept, in some instances where the local access channels have been used for programming that offends a lot of people (including not just porn, but white supremacy programs, graphic anti-abortion programming), the local governments have responded by simply giving back the access channel to the cable operator so that the operator can exercise editorial control and refuse to carry the programming. The end result is what in theory (although, often not in practice) could be a good outlet for independent programming, goes away.

11. With the internet...
...it almost seems like the public access idea looses it's strength...everything that can be done through cable can now be done on the internet?

5. Only people with money should be allowed porn.
Because only the rich are truly lascivious.
