Rice Trip Seeks to Mend Fences Over Iraq
Rice Trip Seeks to Mend Fences Over Iraq

1 hour, 7 minutes ago White House - AP Cabinet & State
By ANNE GEARAN, AP Diplomatic Writer

WASHINGTON - For her symbolic first trip abroad as the new face of U.S. foreign policy, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) is paying special attention to European allies who stuck with the United States through war and its aftermath in Iraq (news - web sites).

Britain, the staunchest ally on Iraq, is the first stop. Rice is to meet with Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on Friday. Later in the trip, Rice will call on Italy and Poland, both countries that sent significant numbers of troops to Iraq despite internal opposition to the war.

She is also offering an olive branch to France — a critic of the Iraq invasion whose people remain suspicious of President Bush (news - web sites)'s intentions across the globe — by choosing Paris as the site of her first major speech on U.S. goals in Europe and beyond.

Rice will skip Spain, which angered the United States by pulling its troops out of Iraq last April, weeks after terrorists bombed Madrid commuter trains on March 11, killing 191 and wounding more than 1,500.

I like that she's skipping Spain. You'd think they'd be the ones we'd want to mend fences with. On the other hand, we did call France many names during the election.

Come to think of it, what country haven't we pissed off? Poland?

10. Rice will continue the bushie policy of insulting the world
A diplomat friend of mine (not American) asks why the bushie administration is deliberately making enemies and making the world hate America -- when it is NOT in America's best interest.

It seems to him that nearly everything the bushies are doing is not in the best interest of America. He then observed that the only groups that seems to be happy with the belligerent attitude are the fundamentalist Christians -- and these American brand of religious fanatics worry him. As a Christian he finds the fundie's religiosity insulting and worrisome.

We haven't heard much about Condeeliar's religious belief's -- is she also a fundie and does she share bushie's brand of religious fundamentalism? If so this would very much control how she interacts and responds diplomatically.

11. It will be great when the Sec of State
learns that lying to the world is not in our best interests. Colin lied to the UN many times and I can see Condi emulating that performance.
May as well forget about diplomacy. Let the bombing begin-it's what w does best. Heh-heh, smirk.

17. I'm not so optimistic
I have the feeling that nowadays Chirac is trying to get closer to the bush admin. I wouldn't say "by any means" but...

Maybe because he knows that 4 more years at the forefront of the opposition to them could be "difficult" to live.

Kerry's defeat was a real blow to New Europeans' expectations.

18. Oh great, like we "mended fences" with Canada?
Remember how great the shrub's trip to Canada went when, to everyone's astonishment, he had the audacity to lecture PM Martin? Gee, I wonder with whom we'll be at war when Kindasleazy's done "mending fences."
