Hating in the Name of God

Miami's Yahweh ben Yahweh cult, the most notorious sect of the Black Hebrew Israelites, was implicated in a reign of terror in the 1980s that included fire bombings, extortion, and 14 murders. The leader, Hulon Mitchell Jr., is in prison for conspiracy in connection with the murders. Mitchell ordered the slayings of defectors as well as the murder of random Whites as part of an initiation to an inner circle within the cult.
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a Black supremacist group named the Stream of Knowledge is being investigated in six states.
They are described as an offshoot of the Black Hebrew Israelite religion, and have been amassing weapons and followers for years. The Stream allegedly recruits at military bases and in prisons, preparing for a race war. Both the Black Hebrew Israelites and Louis Farrakhan are in some ways mirror images of the Christian Identity groups:
Both see Jews as the spawn of Satan and accuse them of secretly controlling modern America.Racist messages embedded in religion are nothing new. But the medium for disseminating such hatred has changed dramatically. No longer limited to short wave radio transmissions and blurry, grammatically challenged flyers, Christian Identity is spreading in the form of White power rock music, slick magazines, and the Internet. According to Susan DeCamp of the Montana Association of Churches, Christian Identity families have also infiltrated small fundamentalist churches, at times trying to incorporate their racist beliefs into their church's doctrines.

The Andressohns are members of the Hebrew Israelites, a group of African-Americans who consider themselves the true descendants of the biblical tribe of Judah. Members are referred to as saints, and many take the last name "Ben Israel," meaning son of Israel.

In the past two years, DCF received several abuse allegations that the children were not adequately fed, according to a source familiar with the case. It is not clear how child abuse investigators responded, but child advocates question whether DCF mishandled the case.

However, the parents' dietary practices and religious beliefs would not be a sufficient defense for inadequately nourishing their child, he said.
"They can't impose their religious or dietary beliefs if doing so places the child in physical jeopardy," he said.

In California, three members of a secretive group known as "The Family" pleaded guilty last year to felony child endangerment charges after a 19-month-old boy died of starvation. Prosecutors said the toddler's death was the result of his biological parent's strict vegetarian lifestyle.
In Massachusetts, a jury convicted a cult leader last year of first-degree murder for starving his infant son to death to comply with a religious vision.

Raw-food vegetarian ate steaks, report says
BY TERE FIGUERAS

A Homestead couple whose infant daughter died of malnutrition subjected the girl to ''cleansing'' enemas and punished their other children for straying from a raw-food diet --
even as the father smoked cigarettes and indulged in the occasional steak, according to documents released Monday by the county medical examiner's office.
<snip>
Her stomach held nothing but air and eight ounces of a ''grassy'' smelling liquid and even her body and stool had the same grassy odor, according to the documents.

According to the medical examiner's case file, Lamoy and Joseph Andressohn
gave Woyah wheat grass enemas -- and allowed her 6-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister to assist -- because they thought the child was toxic. The other children also received enemas as well, according to the 6-year-old, who was interviewed by the state attorney's office.
''When children ate cooked food, they were given enemas as punishment,'' wrote Motte.
