Incomplete Iraqi Election Results From Six Provinces Show Main Shiite Party Leading

Feb. 3, 2005 - Incomplete election results from six of Iraq's 18 provinces show the Shiite clerical-endorsed ticket running strong in races for seats in the National Assembly, according to the first official results from the election released Thursday.

The United Iraqi Alliance, which is backed by the country's most influential Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, was leading 3-1 against its closest opponent in Baghdad province, with a quarter of the votes counted.

The list of candidates led by interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi was second in the six provinces: Baghdad, Dhi Qar, Muthanna, Qadisiyah, Najaf and Karbala.

Those are predominantly Shiite areas, and the Alliance was expected to dominate there. It was unclear where the Baghdad votes had come from. The figures were so small that it is impossible to say whether they represent the nationwide trend.

high turnout. There was even an impromptu referendum on independence for some Sunni-majority regions.
