Gonzales Wins Confirmation as Attorney General
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - White House counsel Alberto Gonzales survived a Democratic wall of opposition on Thursday to win U.S. Senate confirmation as the nation's next attorney general. He will be the first Hispanic-American to hold the post.

3. Probably Gonzalez.
Ashcroft, for all that he is a gibbering loon, apparently had some independance and some genuinely held beliefs which he would not compromise. He was way wrong, of course, but he appears to have been sincere.

This guy Gonzalez is just a crook, to call him a whore would be an insult to whores. He reminds me a bit of Smithers, he would simply do anything, take any position, that Bush wants him to take. Spineless sycophant is a good description. He is a lackey, a completely worthless gutless coward of a human being who has latched onto the Bush gravy train for his personal gain and has absolutely no personal honor. A complete shitheel.

58. Who Abstained?
and why couldn't more Democrats do that?

For example, like Bill Nelson. Florida is fairly conservative and has a large Hispanic population. It would have been political suicide to vote against Gonzales 'cos the media whores and Republicans (same thing) would have branded him a racist. But he could have abstained.

34. The Six Dems Who Think Torture Is OK
Joseph Lieberman (CT) - well, we've always known he's a bit of a hawk

Mary Landrieu (LA) - not exactly the most progressive

Mark Pryor (AR) - don't know what his story is

Ken Salazar (CO) - isn't he Hispanic?

Ben Nelson (NE) - isn't he kind of Conservative anyway?

Bill Nelson (FL) - Kissing ass to the Cubans in Miami or making deals with Mel Martinez. Breaks my heart, I've met him, he seems really nice & I was all fired up to work him in 2006. Possibly chicken over that election.

Those six pink-tutu Democrats should be put on notice by their constituents, and in the case of Lieberman, I really hope Paul Newman unseats him (as the rumor goes).

Even more revolting than the "shameful six" Democrats, it's teh fact that senator McCain voted for Gonzales. McCain knows first-hand what torture is, and why we shoudl support the Geneva Convention. Still, McCain voted for Alberto "Little Noriega" Gonzalez. For shame!!!!

57. It is a 7 day period of mourning
The word "Shiva" comes from the Hebrew word "Shevah" which means 7. You sit for 7 days. It is customary to rend a garment, sit on a low box, not shave (if you are a man), refrain from any entertainment. You also say the prayer for the dead during this period- it is called Kaddish.

The Shiva period begins after burial and ends after 7 days. You do not sit Shiva on the Sabbath or on holidays. During this time, people come to your home to offer comfort and sympathy. People cook for you and take care of all the day to day stuff for you, so you are not additionally burdened. Under Jewish law, burial is within 24 hours of death if possible. We do not have wakes. The burial is completed and THEN the visitors come.

I just feel like America has died and I want to sit shiva. Watching that fool of a man masquerading as the President of my country, watching people shower him with adulation, listening to his lies get spun and revised as he speaks, hearing that the Senate confirmed a man who thinks torture is OK just makes me want to mourn the loss of my country. I am ineffably sad and I am beginning to feel that there is no hope.
