Kevorkian furloughed from prison for hernia surgery
Associated Press
02/04/2005

DETROIT (AP) -- Assisted-suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian was released from prison Thursday so he could undergo bilateral hernia surgery, his attorney said.

Kevorkian, 76, is serving a 10- to 25-year sentence for second-degree murder after being convicted of giving a fatal injection of drugs to a Lou Gehrig's disease patient in 1998.

Kevorkian was given 10 minutes' notice early Thursday that he was being released from the Thumb Correctional Facility in Lapeer, Morganroth said.

Besides the hernia, Kevorkian reportedly has hepatitis C, high blood pressure, arthritis, a heart murmur, circulatory problems and the beginning stages of cataracts in his eyes.

1. My mom died from ALS
Based on discussions with the Doctor and the attendents, we had a morphine drip administered. That stopped her suffering. I think it's a shame that this guy is spending time in jail for giving the patient what he asked for.

This society just can't come to grips with reality. For such a faith based society, we can't seem to let people depart from this world with any dignity.

3. I hope he uses his free time
to beat it over the border to Canada. He'd be treated like a hero here.

5. I have never heard of a furlough from Prison......
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 02:29 AM by liberalnurse
especially for a convicted murderer who still has years left on his sentence. Now jails, they do it all the time to avoid cost of the medical treatment. .....Inmates return to finish a sentence but it's typically a mild crime......

Very suspicious.......

6. Okay, he is not on a furlough....it's a round-trip.
A furlough is went they, the inmate is on his own and trusted to return. This is not the case as he is under 24/7 security and remains in custody. Thats a big difference.

7. Wonder if he got Hep C
in prison. An article in Harper's a while ago discussed the pending Hepatitis C epidemic to come out of prisons - especially the privately run prisons. They have calculated the cost savings of letting the disease run rampant.

This is too sad.
