Gonzales: Fighting Terror Will Be Priority
WASHINGTON -- Reporting for his first day as attorney general, Alberto Gonzales told Justice Department employees their priority would remain combatting terrorism "but we will do so in a way that's consistent with our values."
...
His plate is already overflowing with serious tasks: Lobbying Congress for reauthorization of the USA Patriot Act, the Justice Department's premiere, and widely criticized, anti-terrorism law; investigating who among his former White House colleagues leaked a CIA employee's name to the media; and coming through on his promise to the Senate to prosecute anyone who tortured or abused foreign detainees.
...
He reminded Justice employees that President Bush has said their top job is protecting the country from future acts of terrorism. "But we will do so in a way that's consistent with our values, consistent with our legal obligations," said Gonzales, speaking in an ornate atrium near his new office.
...
The ACLU already is calling for Gonzales to remove himself from any torture investigations by the Justice Department, and Schumer has suggested he not participate in his department's investigation into who inside the administration leaked a CIA employee's name.

1. Just remove the word 'Fighting' from that headline
and I think you pretty much have it in a nutshell.

2. And civil rights and simple human decency will be discarded...
...as 'quaint'.

Bush, Gonzales, Rumsfeld and the rest of them ought to be up on war-crimes charges.

8. Well, duh!
Now that's he's confirmed, he can recant on his earlier testimony to shun the use of torture and go full speed ahead. Who but a total idiot ever thought he'd do anything else?

9. Gonzales and his ilk are the terror
...they are the formulators and the executioners. Our legislature is totally bought and paid for. A joke. 911, the anthrax attacks and the Wellstone murder did them in.

10. will someone tell Gonzales its the JUSTICE Dept, not Homeland Security
His job is to enforce the federal laws, and by doing so promote justice. Its why it is called the Justice Dept in the first place. Defense of the nation is the responsibility of other depts.

Am I the only one who thinks guys like Gonzales who twist the meaning of words are full of shit?

12. So, if terrorism just means activism to the Administration......hmmm?
Kind of like the Clean Skies Act would be better defined as the No Skies Left Behind.

Everything is exactly its opposite in the world according to Bush.
