Guerrillas Ambush U.S. Convoys in Iraq
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030918/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq&cid=540&ncid=1480

KHALDIYAH, Iraq - Guerrillas ambushed two U.S. military convoys with remote-controlled bombs in separate attacks Thursday, wounding two Americans and sparking a heavy gunbattle in which a 20-year-old man was shot in the chest and two trucks were destroyed.

In the nearby town of Fallujah, witnesses said an American patrol opened fire on guests at a wedding, killing a 14-year-old boy and wounding six people, after mistaking celebratory gunfire for an attack.

The violence heightened tensions in the "Sunni Triangle," a belt of central Iraq that has been the heart of resistance against the American-led occupation. U.S. soldiers in the region are extremely jumpy, caught in what has become a guerrilla war.

North of Baghdad, fire raged at an oil pipeline following an explosion at the site, the U.S. military said, raising concerns that it was the latest in a series of sabotage attacks. The pipeline carries crude oil from fields near Kirkuk to Iraq's largest refinery at Beiji.

2. it's getting harder and harder
to get clear info on fatalities. This is the site I use, but each news agency has different numbers on the dead and wounded. The Centcom site gives little info.

8. The fire won't affect oil production or the timetable for resuming exports
How can they expect us to believe that?

9. And the hits just keep on coming...
A 30 second mention of an ambush this morning on CNN, the rest of the day has been idiotic weathermen hamming it up and hugging telephone poles trying not to get blown away by Isabel. Wedding parties and 14 yr. old children being shot up pales in comparison to a dwindling category 2 storm and some power outages. I can never decide who I hate the most, BFEE or the media.

10. You can bet on what's going to lead the news tonight
One of the bloodiest days of the occupation, and it'll be all Isabel for the first ten minutes, and then as an oh yeah, eight Americans were killed in Iraq today.

11. maybe not even that
none of the US networks are reporting deaths-- at most they might admit to some casualties tonight

expect a steady stream of "accidents" over the next few days to add up to 8 dead

12. Or maybe never...
There's a fairly large percentage of the US troops in Iraq who are not US citizens (yet) and who are very much out of contact with any family at all. How many of those troops have died without any mention?

I could tell you the stories I've read in the foreign press, but many people here in the US don't believe something unless it's blessed by CNN first.

13. I e-mailed Wolf Blitzer at CNN
to ask why they were'nt reporting these stories today, I had just hit send, looked up and there he was standing outside with an umbrella talking about the storm. Unbelievable. It'd be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

14. CHrist! Did you read this?
<snip>
Hours after the ambushes, soldiers pointed tank cannons at reporters every time they tried to approach.
<snip>

(from the same piece)

No wonder reporters are giving a positive spin to things. They'll get shot if they don't.
