Carter asks for aid for flood victims in Guyana
Associated Press
Published on: 02/04/05

Former President Jimmy Carter is asking citizens and world governments to respond to massive floods in the nation of Guyana with the same generosity they showed tsunami victims in Asia.

Last month, the small country on the northern coast of South America was hit with its heaviest rainfall in a century. At least 13 people have died from drowning or disease and hundreds of thousands remain displaced after their homes were flooded. <snip>

Carter said in a statement that officials are predicting it will take another month for flood waters in coastal Guyana to recede — if heavy rains don't continue. Those waters are contributing to the spread of disease, and food and fresh water are scarce in some areas. <snip>
