Wal-Mart is sued over theft charge
Bridgette Hunter, an African American, is seeking unspecified damages from Wal-Mart for violating her civil rights and subjecting her to humiliation and false imprisonment, according to a lawsuit filed in Sacramento County Superior Court this week by her attorney, Anthony M. Perez Jr....
Hunter, 40, has no criminal or arrest record, Perez said.
...
Since Hunter didn't know if she would have to pay for the bad batch of pictures, she placed the empty envelope with the others on the checkout counter for price scanning. The cashier told her that she was not required to pay for the bad photos, according to Hunter's court filing.

Security staff confronted Hunter outside the store, took her back inside while laughing at her, detained her in a back room and then cited her for failing to pay $3.90 for the photos she had discarded.

Hunter says that as she was leaving the detention area, she heard one of the security staff proclaim, "We got ourselves another (racial epithet)!" and "a slapping sound (like a 'high-five') followed by laughter."

Wal-Mart's billing her for $225 as a "civil demand", whatever that means.

2. Get 'em!
Geez. All over $3.effing90, and this is the corporation that makes billions and is single-handedly going to economically sink America into the crapper (by making us China's bitch, so to speak). I hope she gets a HUUUUUGE settlement.

4. After a while, you start to wonder:
is this conglomerate run by George Bush? Or maybe John Ashcroft? They're so stupid, it's just mind-boggling.

During the Xmas shoppping season (this last season), lots of people wer boycotting Wal-Mart. Sure enough, on the LBN you could read articles like "Wal Mart shows disappointing Xmas figures", or "Wal Mart sales drop by 0.7%".

Costco, on the other hand, is a "Blue" company, and it showed profits of over 10%, and this was before the Xmas season was over. They may have showed a bigger profit when all was said and done.

So in the meantime, Walrus-Mart turns around and does this. You have to wonder: do they have 1" inch thick skulls? Don't they see the trend which has already started?

Stupid corporate marketing pariahs.

10. And Costco pays a living wage
Their full timers make something like $40K a year, twice what Wally World pays and better benefits too.

Wall St. was beating on Costco's CEO not long ago for being "too extravagant," but he said, basically, you get what you pay for.

Dump Wally World -- shop Costco, they have a heart.

5. $3.90 for bad pictures?
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 01:09 PM by Coastie for Truth
My cousin's "Mom and Pop" camera store (which through a series of cannibalizations ended up being at the bottom of Ritz's food chain) NEVER CHARGED FOR BAD PICTURES.

That's Wal-Mart for you. (My minimal experience with Wal-Mart - before I switched to all digital --- definitely not Salon quality --- I could do better with D-76 on Tri-X film and Dektol on Medalist paper)

They weren't really so "Mom and Pop" - they did stock Rolleis and Leicas and Contax's and Kodak Retina's. Just "family owned" neighborhood store in an upscale neighborhood

6. Looks like the store said she didn't have to pay for them.

...........

It was a security screw-up all the way around.

7. That's why I prefer neighborhood stores,
Mom and Pop stores, boutiques.

When you get above the absolute schluck level (i.e., Wal Mart), the price is not that much more.

Also, neighborhood stores, Mom and Pop stores, and boutiques don't have "temporary" rent-a-cops and massive bureaucracies.

8. You know how we can protest? Dump exposed film in the Walmart bins
Just throw-in some exposed film with a bunch of trash on it, leave a fake address and phone number, and dump it in the Walmart bin.

Maybe, on the last frame of the film, take a photo of a sign that says, "This is for Bridgette Hunter!"

Make sure you order double-prints, and other extras.

Make it an expensive job.

And then, of course, never show-up to pick-up your film.

9. I hope Mall Wart keeps up the good work.
Maybe they'll end up running themselves out of business.

11. Is this a joke?

' Hunter says that as she was leaving the detention area, she heard one of the security staff proclaim, "We got ourselves another (racial epithet)!" and "a slapping sound (like a 'high-five') followed by laughter." '

Punks.
