According to the affidavit, David Shaffer told sheriff's deputies that he and his wife were arguing about finances. The argument escalated, and Hatsy Heep Shaffer threw a "beefsteak" at him late Monday, the affidavit stated.
David Shaffer retreated from the kitchen to the bedroom of their home in the 200 block of Puryear Road, according to the affidavit, and his wife took a handgun from a kitchen drawer, shot him, then threw the gun into a swimming pool.

"She seemed to be in a lot of (financial) disputes with a lot of different people," said Travis County Probate Judge Guy Herman, who saw about nine years of litigation between Shaffer and her siblings.
Shaffer filed for bankruptcy in 2002, her third since 1990.
