IRAQ'S leading Sunni clerics group has demanded a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops as the price of their participation in drawing up a new constitution.
The demand comes as more than 20 people were reportedly killed at the weekend, and militants threatened to execute a kidnapped Italian journalist today.
The Jihad Organisation, in an Internet statement that could not be immediately authenticated, said it would kill Giuliana Sgrena, 56, if Italy did not withdraw its 3000 troops from Iraq.
A group calling itself the Islamic Jihad Organisation also claimed on Friday to have taken the correspondent for the leftist Il Manifesto and set a 72-hour deadline for Italy to remove its troops, but did not specifically threaten to kill her.
"We in the Jihad Organisation . . . will implement God's law on (kill) . . . Giuliana Sgrena after 48 hours if the Italian Government, headed by the criminal Berlusconi (Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi), does not announce it will withdraw (troops) from Iraq," said the statement.
