`Pre-emptive' study of Iran data started
The Senate Intelligence Committee has launched what its chairman called a "pre-emptive" examination of U.S. intelligence on Iran as part of an effort to avoid the problems that plagued America's prewar assessments on Iraq.

Sen. Pat Roberts (news, bio, voting record) (R-Kan.) said he had sought the unusual review because the erroneous prewar claims about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction had made lawmakers wary of the CIA (news - web sites)'s current assessments on Iran.

"We have to be more pre-emptive on this committee to try to look ahead and determine our capabilities so that you don't get stuck with a situation like you did with Iraq," said Roberts, who also voiced concern about current intelligence on the insurgency in Iraq.

The White House has made it clear that Iran will be a focus of U.S. foreign policy in President Bush (news - web sites)'s second term. In his State of the Union speech last week, the president identified Iran as "the world's primary state sponsor of terror, pursuing nuclear weapons while depriving its people of the freedom they seek and deserve."

1. It doesn't say much for the republicans when Bush's own
party doesn't trust him and are pre-empting the pre-emptor on Iran.

2. Interesting...
...they seem to see Iran as in the same category as Iraq. The fact that they want to "do it better" this time 'round is pretty cold comfort when you realize that they think of Iran as being another Iraq-type situation and that, with a few tweaks, they can make that model work.

3. Maybe they will START with clearings/mass murders like in
Fallujah and other areas rather than the supposed they will throw flowers line this time around. Wouldn't that be doing it better this time around... at least in their SHOCK & AWE minds?

5. That's funny...*I* knew in 2002 the "Iraq WMD" was total absolute BULLSHIT
Yet the POTUS and the United States Congress didn't know that the "Iraq WMD" was total absolute BULLSHIT.

6. pre-emptive review before rubber stamping
they're going to do a better job of the preping propaganda-fear-mongering lies before invading another country? How about committee review of the propaganda the press-puppies will be putting out? How much will the lap-dogs get paid?

any "pre-emptive" review of the "facts" should start with bush* and his mouth-pieces -- and the hell with looking on bush*'s desk for Iran Invasion plans -- best check Rummy or Crashcart's desks first
