US 'eavesdropped on Habib, lawyer'

FORMER Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib has accused US authorities of eavesdropping on private conversations he had with his American lawyer, then using the information during interrogations.

Mr Habib's Australian lawyer Stephen Hopper today said US authorities listened in on private conferences between his client and lawyer Joe Margulies.

"One thing he has asked me to say, on the occasions that he was visited by our American lawyer in Guantanamo Bay, he was then taken and interrogated by the US authorities and they raised issues with him that he had discussed confidentially with his lawyer," Mr Hopper said.

"The American authorities were obviously listening in to private conferences and not respecting client-lawyer privilege as they said they would do." <snip>
