Witness saw coup plot as way to fight communism (S.Africa)
February 7, 2005

Pretoria: A former military officer and civil defence expert on Friday told the Boeremag treason trial he became involved in a coup plot because he regarded it as a continuation of his work as a soldier in the fight against communism.

Kenneth Leviton, a former officer in the South African and then-Rhodesian armies and civil defence organiser for the Pretoria City Council for many years, testified that he had decided to withdraw from the planned rightwing coup after realising that it was a "lose-lose situation".

Leviton - only the fifth witness to take the stand since the treason trial commenced almost two years ago - testified that he had met one of the alleged Boeremag leaders, the accused Mike du Toit, in the early 1990s when both were involved in the Afrikaans rightwing political party, the Herstigte Nasionale Party. <snip>

Du Toit had discussed a planning document, similar to the so-called Document 12 (a detailed coup plan) at the meeting and had also confirmed that certain targets had been assigned to members of the plot. <snip>
