By BRAD FOSS
AP Business Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Gasoline prices rose more than 7 percent in January, which typically is one of the slowest driving months of the year. That's leading experts to predict pump prices may surge past last year's record highs when highway travel picks up late in the spring.

<snip>

Tom Kloza, director of Oil Price Information Service in Lakewood, N.J., said he anticipates the price of gasoline to "rocket higher in the next 90 days." Nationally, Kloza predicts average gasoline prices could surpass $2.15 and even run as high as $2.50. That said, he expects those highs to be short-lived.

Exxon Mobil profits exceed $25bn

US oil giant Exxon Mobil made a record $25.3bn (£13.4bn; 19.4bn euros) profit in 2004 as it benefited from the surge in crude oil prices.

The world's largest public oil company saw income from exploration, production and refining soar despite a decline in the amount of oil and gas produced.

<snip>

Analysts said the company's profits were much higher than expected, even taking into account the escalation in crude oil prices.

looks like it'll be another banner year....

1. Welcome, but this is absolutely nothing new. Gas always goes up in
the summer. Or at least since the crisis in the Carter Administration. Curious, isn't it, not really?

2. Winter and summer mix, so they say
You would think 'THEY' would be clever enough to plan ahead.

This could have something to do with the Russkies and China shifting their oil purchase cash to Euro accounts, too.

Gee, whatever happened to all that cheap, Iraqi oil that should have been flowing like water to pay for the war and keep us all driving?

3. Yes, it does...
I'm really more astonished at the record prices, and record profits for 2004.

I don't know....like everything else this administration throws at us, I'm simply in a constant state of horror/bewilderment/anger.

Thanks for the welcome.

4. I think it is called denial and is especially a familiar problem with
survivors of abuse. "Constant state of..." are cue words.

Hang in there, we here in this great "union" are in for one heck of a wild ride. Hope you like roller coasters.

5. Nationalize the oil companies.
They are becoming a threat to the nation's economic well-being.

It ALWAYS goes up in the Summer.

Once our young workers are allowed to gamble their retirement funds away in the stock market, it will come down. All these millions of people, buying into oil futures at $70, then the Bush Pioneers will take the money and run, leaving you with futures that are worth only $5.

Hey, at least you will be able to fill up your Ford Exploder for only $10 as you drive around dumpster diving for food!
