Saudi Woman Beheaded for Killing In-Law
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) - A Saudi woman was beheaded Monday after she was convicted of murdering her mother-in-law, the Interior Ministry said. Noura bint Khalaf al-Harbi was found guilty of setting her mother-in-law, Noura bint Salem al-Harbi, on fire as she slept following a dispute, the ministry said in a statement.

Al-Harbi was the first woman to be beheaded in the kingdom this year

Her execution brings to 13 the number of people beheaded in Saudi Arabia since Jan. 1.

In 2004, Saudi authorities executed 35 people, down from 52 people beheaded in 2003. Most were convicted of drug smuggling.

2. I don't think there is any humane way to execute people
Maybe lethal injections are, but most other methods are pretty barbaric.

Electrocution is pretty awful, I've heard it is basically setting someone on fire from the inside.
Beheading is traditional not just in that part of the world, but also in Europe-before the guillotine, they just used an axe. It sometimes took more than one hit to do the job. The guillotine was considered more humane because it was quick.
Crucifixion was a nasty practice, too. So is a firing squad, a gas chamber or pretty much every other way of execution.

So I don't think that the Saudi's method is any worse than anyone else's, it's just bloodier.

6. don't forget
drawn and quartering. but i think that was part of the punishment to go badly.
back then who thought about 'humane', which i find to be an oxymoron.

10. the guillotine was invented as a more "humane" punishment
Apparently it involved a much swifter death than hanging or certainly being drawn and quartered. I expect they use a sword rather than a guillotine in Saudi Arabia, but our nation is hardly in a position to comment on how the rest of the world executes prisoners.

7. I'd rather be beheaded
It's faster. Actually, beheading was considered the most humane form of execution until fairly recently.

12. umm, I think if you gave someone a whole bunch of sleeping pills
it would be totally painless and I don't know why they don't do that

28. It would be quite a struggle..
forcing the pills (all 50 of them or so) into someones mouth and then somehow trying to make him swallow. Anyone realising that these pills will kill him will put up quite fight and it's difficult to force someone to swallow.
What you could do of course, is inject the sleeping pills into a vein, same effect, but then you'd call it lethal injection...

:)

31. yes, it would have to be by injection but when I think of that versus
beheadings, electrocution, etc., well it is virtually painless.

13. Executing people is probably the most inhumane and dehumanizing
thing you can find in the world today. It is revolting, every time I hear of executions I get nauseous. And I'm a moral relativist and an atheist, for crying out loud!

When * talks about Iran's human rights record I immediately think of Saudi Arabia. I have iranian friends and I can tell you, it isn't half as bad as SA..

Disgusting..

15. I've attended 2 beheadings
The first involved 3 people, the second involved 2.

Following the initial blow, a Doctor comes out and makes sure the "victims" are truly dead. During the first execution I attended, one of the three was not. They waited about 10 minutes more. Still alive. Finally the executioner administered another blow. Following that, the person was declared dead.

It is not always quick.

19. in Riyadh
no - just a spectator

I am totally against the death penalty, but wanted to see what this was all about. I don't think it is any less civilized than our practices here in the U.S. Also, from what I could gather about the crimes, they were in-line with what would warrant a similar execution here. It was hard to track down their actual crimes as the media was a bit more restrained there about these things.

Here's a link to the Consular Information Sheet for Saudi Arabia.

Persons violating Saudi Arabia''s laws, even unknowingly, may be expelled, arrested, imprisoned or even executed. Suspects can be detained, without charges or legal counsel and with limited consular access, for months during the investigative stage of criminal cases.

21. No, this is some of the stuff that freaks me out...
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1012.html

Penalties for the import, manufacture, possession, and consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences, fines, public flogging, and/or deportation. The penalty for drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia is death. Saudi officials make no exceptions. Customs inspections at ports of entry are thorough. The U.S. Embassy and Consulates General have no standing in Saudi courts to obtain leniency for an American convicted of alcohol or drug offenses.

Besides alcohol products and illicit drugs, Saudi Arabia also prohibits the import, use, or possession of any item that is held to be contrary to the tenets of Islam (See "Customs Regulations" section above.) The private ownership of weapons is prohibited. Imported and domestic audiovisual media and reading matter are censored.

Homosexual activity is considered to be a criminal offense and those convicted may be sentenced to lashing and/or a prison sentence, or death.

Saudi authorities do not permit criticism of Islam or the royal family. The government prohibits the public practice of religions other than Islam, although private worship by non-Muslims generally is permitted. Non-Muslims suspected of violating these restrictions have been jailed.

Quoting the original article:
"Her execution brings to 13 the number of people beheaded in Saudi Arabia since Jan. 1.
In 2004, Saudi authorities executed 35 people, down from 52 people beheaded in 2003. Most were convicted of drug smuggling."

But I guess this barbaric regime is ok with * because the Saudis are our friends.

18. Well it's only fair, Islamic law says so..
And since top Shiite clerics said today that Iraq should embrace Islamic law, we can soon expect news like this to come out of Iraq, too..
It will be easy to distinguish America's allies in the region: they are the countries that behead people!

By Steven Komarow, USA TODAY
BAGHDAD — A high-ranking Shiite cleric who helped a coalition of religious parties to apparent victory in Iraq's elections eight days ago said Sunday that the new constitution must embody Islamic law.

"We will accept no compromise," said a statement by Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Ishaq al-Fayad, one of the three top Shiite clerics who serve beneath the most senior religious leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. Al-Fayad said separation of religion and state must be "completely rejected."

24. Dead is dead
Beheading may seem particularly brutal to us - maybe because of the mutilation aspect - but dead is dead. You're just as dead - and probably died just as horrifically, albeit somewhat less messily - if electrocuted, shot, hung, or gassed.

Execution is execution. It's all barbaric. And there are times it's justifiable. Damn few, but there are some.

25. Actually strapping someone to a gurney and injecting poison into...
...into their veins sounds more barbaric to me. I know one is just as bad as the other and you are correct, dead is certainly dead. Its just that the injection stuff just gives me the willies. But then I never liked needles.
