6. Russia has an interest in access to the Indian Ocean as well
as Iranian Oil. Iran clearly would like to have a powerful ally that could take nuclear attacks out of the list of options for US threats against Iran.

Putin may see in Bush/Cheney/Rice Asian policy the old cold-war desire to encircle and isolate the Russian bear, disguised this time as part of a war on tyranny.

Getting Syria, and Iran into the Russian sphere would relieve some of the Kremlin's anxiety about such encirclement.

3. This must be why Condi made her threat to Russia...
this weekend. One more indicator among many that the world is coalescing to isolate the US as the real 'rogue' state, imo.

8. Interesting you bring up Contradicta. She IS, after all, a Sovietologist.
That's her specialty. She's recognized as an authority on the Cold War. MOST intriguing that she's played such a key role in resurrecting Cold War dynamics in the world. I always wondered why we'd engage a Cold War specialist as national security advisor, and of course now as Secretary of State - when the Cold War ended more than a decade ago. That was one of the first things I wondered when I started learning about her - why do we want somebody like HER in there? The Soviet Union that she specialized in doesn't exist anymore. Maybe the republi-CONS just feel a lot more comfy with the idea of a big ol' hairy boogeyman out there that we have to fight some holy war against. And since our "fearless leader" has made it clear that Osama doesn't matter anymore, how 'bout the good ol' Russian bear?

And what does georgie-poo see in Putin's eyes when he looks into them NOW?

12. It seems to me there are multi-faceted messages being...
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 02:44 PM by Spazito
traded between various countries. This one, Russia and Iran agreement, is only one, albeit a big one. Russia and China have already served notice they will be unpegging their currency from the US greenback and going, instead, with a 'basket' of currencies dominated by the Euro, another shot across the US bow, metaphorically speaking, imo.

Add to that the flurry of trade agreements being signed by Russia and China with Canada, South and Central American countries and none of those include the US and you have, imo, a very loud message being sent to the US regarding it's current policies and the probable repercussions.

Edited to add: the multiple agreements being signed with Cuba on various initiatives, this is being done, imo, to give bush a very visual poke in the nose as well as being very wise investments.

4. Wooden't want to see our wittle chimpy get Ahn-gry now would we?
Russian cold war back on the horizon?
Or this time is it a hot WAR?
Russian and China aren't about to allow the U.S. to control ALL of the countries that produce the world's oil.
...and why should they?
Wouldn't that be a bad business decision?
They have to look out for themselves.

10. It also sounds like Iran is playing chess.
And it appears they may be a lot better at it than we are. With the saber-rattling and bombast and blustering and threats and other crap coming out of our people, looks like they just went and got themselves some protection, like the wimpy kid with big glasses who sidles up to the biggest, brawniest red-meat-eater in class. If I felt threatened like that, I might want to do the same thing. If nothing else, they may have held us off. Unless bush is so reckless that he wants to risk it to prove how big his dick is.

5. It won't help much
if they sell them a power plant just to have it blown up. I wonder if they will supply enough ground to air missiles to protect them.

to NOT give Iran reactors. I guess Russia is going to have its hand out now.

11. This Means An Air Strike Before The End Of April
If they are going to do it. The entire timetable is being driven by the date of fueling the reactor. Striking a fueled reactor is probably even more than Our Leader is willing to risk.

" . . .were preparing to sign the accord . . . at the end of February."

"The source said the first containers with fuel would be supplied about two months after signing."
